30 Bananas a Day!

The Woodstock Fruit Festival came to an end this past Thursday. It was sort of sad to have to say goodbye to everyone and return to our everyday lives. But that's not what this blog post is about, nope. It's about the massive durian hangover after the week of partying. Okay, well not technically caused by the durian, more the late nights and lack of sleep. You never really notice how much travelling and lack of sleep takes out of you until after you've gotten back into normal life. I was really taking my typical 9-11 hours horizontal per night for granted! I figured for one week out of the year I would make an exception, no worries. But oohhh boy did I pay the price when I finally got home! I got home late Thursday night (the 25th of August) and went straight to bed. I woke up about 9 hours later and felt really terrible: headache, slight upset stomach, and generally just not feeling well.

Almost a total lack of appetite for a couple days. I tried eating like I normally would as I typically have trouble sleeping if I don't eat enough fruit, but I got 1/4th of the way through my meal and just couldn't stomach anymore. I figured that's my body's way of telling me that it just needs to rest! That night I collapsed onto my couch at 7 P.M., woke up and hour later and went into my bedroom and slept for another 13 hours straight (besides bathroom breaks). I woke up and still didn't feel myself. Typically I wake up and am ready to go right out of the gate for a bike ride or some other kind of fitness activity. This morning I just didn't have it in me. I tried having some banana smoothie, barely got it all down, and then went back to sleep for another two hours.

The next day I still didn't have it in me to go out for a bike ride or anything, so I just took it easy and had another restful day. By now, I'm doing alright and should be up for a bike ride tomorrow.

My intention of writing this was primarily to document the effects of not getting enough sleep. I just kept thinking when I felt so crap "man, it sucks to feel like everybody else!!!". So don't take it for granted guys! Do everything you can to adjust your lifestyle to get the sleep you need. It's always better to go to bed earlier than sleep in later. An occasional late night for a special event or for a week of partying in New York is alright, but don't make it a habit!

I know this post wasn't particularly mind blowing, but I'm working on getting into the habit of writing more as very soon you guys will be hearing much more from me!

Thanks for reading! :D

I would rate sleep right up there with being well-carbed and properly hydrated. I'm still struggling to get my carbs where they need to be, but when underslept or dehydrated it REALLY takes its toll on my energy, mood, appearance.

Lesson Learned ! ;)

next time try prescription sleeping pills to go to bed and a double shot espresso to wake you up. everyone else does it so it HAS to be right :P

glad you're recovering. nothing wrong with a little extra sleep (or in your case - a lot!) and giving the legs a break. i'm finding it best to listen to the body rather than work against it.

looking forward to your future posts.

Agreed Chris, sleep is really a key component that is so undervalued by many people these days and you felt the full blown effect.

On a similar note, I got sick last Friday (detox + not sleeping enough due to work and being on pager rotation for several weeks) and yesterday was not going much better for me. I went to bed at 7PM last evening feeling real bad and slept for a whooping 16 hours! Even though I purged out some dark colored mucus from my lungs and sinuses when I woke up, I had the energy to go for a bike ride! I did a short 8 miles ride in the woods / fields at a much slower pace than usual (taking deep breaths). Came back home and my wife told me that I had gained back some colors! Good thing to move our lymphs, sick or not (of course after being well rested)! Tomorrow, I should be back on the freight train into this wonderful journey :)
