30 Bananas a Day!

Weird flushed face - sugar rush??

Does this ever happen to any of you?

For the last couple of days I've had this weird thing where my face feels kind of flushed after I eat. I used to get this feeling a lot when I ate chocolate. It's kind of a "sugar rush" feeling, it's just my face that feels weird, almost clammy. It can last for hours!! It's kind of hard to describe. Anyone know what I mean??

I have been eating a lot of halawi dates from the date people lately; dates do seem to bring this condition on for me. Usually it is better when I eat the dates with things, but I have tried eating them with apples, bananas, and celery, and it still seems really bad lately.

I don't have many other food options at the moment, I am trying to make sure I get enough calories every day, but this is pretty uncomfortable and it's starting to worry me. Is it some kind of blood sugar problem? I never eat that much fat. I had one brazil nut two nights ago, and a few nights before that I had two brazil nuts and maybe a tablespoon of pumpkin seeds. I have been drinking lots of water, too, because I feel like water will make the hot-face go away (but it doesn't really). Maybe I should exercise more, but I have been really short on time the last few weeks because of holiday-stuff.

Please help!

@Cliff

That sentence on p.30 sounds like a clear warning not to eat straight dates. It sounds unambiguous to me.

Drinking too much water is dangerous, especially for 811ers who eat potentially huge amounts of water in their food. A quick internet search on this matter will produce numerous expert explanations of why drinking too much water is dangerous. This matter has come up before on 30bad, so your point is not correct-not that an argumentem ad populum is particularly persuasive anyway.

Many experts advise against eating meat and dairy. Presumably a vegan will go to vegan expert sources, as there are many.

Thanks everybody for the suggestions and thoughts!

I hope it's not menopause - I'm 25. I have been having problems with my cycles though, so maybe it is a hormonal thing? But I'm not sure if this is the same as hot flashes. This lasts longer than half an hour, and it is just my face that feels hot - not neck, chest, or anywhere else on my body. And I don't really get sweaty, although sometimes my face does feel kind of moist.

Yes, I assume the dates are fresh, but certainly they have less water than other fruits. Problem is my fruit supply is low until I get my next wholesale order on Thursday.

I had a dateorade this morning, and the hot-face is better - but still here. I did drink water beforehand, although not as much as I would have liked because we were out at my house (roommates!). I also ate a bunch of celery and drank some more water with the dateorade, which seemed to help. Actually it seems to be getting a bit worse now, 3 hours after the dateorade! I am continuing to drink water, it doesn't make it go away but hopefully it helps with lunch.

It seems to start when I eat breakfast, get worse at lunch, and then go away once I eat dinner. What is the deal?? Should I just eat a lot more greens? My digestion is not great with them, and I am trying to keep up the calories. Sleep may be a factor - I have been having trouble getting up in the morning, although I do get 7-8 hours at least every night so I'm not super low. I've just been really busy with Christmas stuff. Hopefully this gets better when I can get more sleep, and when my bananas are finally ready!

If you check page 30 of your 80/10/10 book, you'll see that Dr G advises against eating dried or dehydrated fruit. He does combine dates with less sugary foods in some of his recipes though.

People do actually die from excess water consumption sometimes. You can do serious damage to yourself if you drink too much fluid. I've gone for months on 811 without drinking a drop of anything and been more than well hydrated. There is a lot of water in many 811 foods, depending on what you mostly eat.

So watch out for well intentioned, but potentially dangerous medical/health advise. Make sure you listen to real experts with appropriate credentials.

It's possible it's a sugar thing.  When I was eating SAD the same thing would happen to me, usually if I was really tired in the afternoon and ended up eating something sugary like a big cookie or something as a pick me up (I know...ugh) within a few minutes my face would be really flushed and warm and I would have to drink tons of water to get it to cool down.  I started paying more attention to when it was happening and it really seemed to be a combination of tiredness and sugar that did it.

try making some date milk (dates and water) and sip it slowly, chewing too. sometimes when i eat too fast i can feel a bit overheated and lethargic.

blending the dates should make 'em a bit easier to digest. hope it helps!

I always drink heaps of water (0.5 - 1L) about 20 mins before a meal not after.

That same thing occasionally happens to me. It's usually if i've been doing too much manual labour at work without drinking enough water. I just have to make sure I drink enough water at work and it doesn't happen.

However, you say you're drinking a lot of water. So maybe it's something different.
