Hi there people... As the creator of the pregnancy/post-partum group on this site and recent owner of www.lfrvfamilies.com natural birth and families is near and dear to my heart. I've studied/trained in birth work and occasionally work in that field...I'm also a mom.
I had my first daughter in a truly phenomenal natural setting, with a competent, beautiful, raw-friendly vegan midwife and doulas. My midwife became like a second mom to me. She's been around a long-time and she is a truly wonderful, skilled, intelligent woman.
It just happens that this took place in South Carolina, where a bill has just been proposed that will end the possibility of families choosing to employ independent midwives(also called lay midwives) who don't have their ideals tied to the back pockets of the medical industry.
The legalese makes it sound almost like it's just a few more regulations, but the reality of it is that many choices will become impossible and tons of natural, skilled, independent midwives will not be able to work with integrity or at all any longer.
If you think this is just South Carolina, unfortunately this not true. This type of thing will be popping up in other states near you. Please spread the word.
In this article I give a little more information and will update on what's happening with the bill, as I'm getting the word out and working with organizations trying to stop this complete b.s.
Thanks for reading and please share.

Comment by Mera/Feather Story on March 5, 2013 at 6:49am Mama O, thanks for the recommendation, I sent a request. Yes, it has been a problem in most places in the U.S. for years with all the regulations and hoops. I've known about issues in several states and I could've done more about it years ago, but I guess I was just trying to look out for myself and find my own ideal birthing situations at that time.
Herbivore Lion...yes the lying position is all about convenience for the doctor/nurses. A woman should be able to choose whatever position feels most comfortable for her to give birth in, very, very rarely would that be a lying position, for many reasons.
Danny...the reasons I'd guess they want to get rid of lay midwives rather than other midwives is because lay midwives are completely independent of mainstream medicine. The hospitals are losing money due to the popularity of midwives who won't be easily influenced by mainstream medicine and quickly suggest interventions.
When I had my first daughter almost 6 years ago my midwife had to get some tests done to make sure I wasn't high-risk. Midwives weren't allowed to do high-risk births and that had to be checked out by a physician. Other than that there was no other blatant regulations. That was in South Carolina.
Comment by Danny on March 5, 2013 at 4:11am why do you think they are trying to get rid of lay midwives?

Comment by ednshell on March 4, 2013 at 9:45am Texas and NC too. I will be on the lookout for anything in Missouri. We have a very vocal and active midwives group here. Thanks for posting.
Comment by Herbivore Lion on March 3, 2013 at 3:53pm How on earth did women give birth before doctors? I've also read somewhere that the reason women usually give birth from a lying/sitting position is just so the doctor can see what's going on. Apparently this is a bad idea because you are going against gravity and it's best to give birth from a squatting/kneeling position.
On a relevant subject I have an anti-circumcision group here if anyone would like to join and help develop.
I also think this video is very good for explaining how the raw food diet makes giving birth a whole different experience . A lot of people say women have great pain threshold because of the pain they experience during birth. These people have clearly confused the ability to sustain pain with the ability endure pain. It can't be endurance unless you have a choice. I think the medical profession likes to glorify pain so you get something out of their outrageous failings/deceptions.
