30 Bananas a Day!

Struggling to get enough fruit; cooked foods make me bloated...Help please?

This week, I haven't been able to afford so much fruit. So, following Durianrider's advice. I turned to cooked carbohydrates, particularly potatoes. After I had potatoes, I felt horrible. It was hell on my digestion. I wasn't taking a dump as often and I still felt bloated and full even after 24 hours of eating it. For years, I would feel bloated after half a portion of a meal. But without the potatoes, I could barely even get 2000 calories, so I continued relying on them until today. I decided that getting in the extra few hundred calories just wasn't worth the discomfort. With all this bloating, I was only able to fit in 500 calories of cooked foods today (I can't buy fruit at the moment). I guess cooked carbs don't work for me as they do for Durianrider.

I will be getting Food Stamp from the U.S. government soon, so I would be able to buy as much fruit as I want without my mom having to spend any money. However, until then, I really don't know what to do and I'm freaking out! Has anybody ever felt this way? Any thoughts on how to handle this situation? Thanks so much! :D

Hi Sophia,

Did you try eating 'regular' potatoes or yams/sweet potatoes? If you haven't tried yams or sweet potatoes you might want to before eating rice. I would go for cooked (either steamed or boiled) roots and veggies before grains.

i did that but it didn't work for me/ Thank you, though :)

if you can't afford much fruit, when you eat potatoes try to eat them with lots of greens, good luck.

I'll use the last bit of cash I have to stock up on dried fruits while still having a bit of cooked carbs. I'll try corn and rice instead of potatoes, though. Thank you guys so much!

i dont think fruit is expensive relative to the health cost of cooked food. cooked food makes u sick and pharmaceuticals arent cheap nor are cure alls. i think you should just try some fruit with cooked until you get your food stamp

Try calorie dense foods. Since money is currently an issue try to be organic but do NOT sacrifice calories to for dollars. Even eating all non-organic is much better than SAD.

That being said - pineapple is pretty calorie dense. Figs and dates are another good dense calorie source. Dates, in my area, cost about 300% more if I buy organic so on those I buy just normal dates. With dates and figs - they are much lower cost too when you can find them in bulk. One ounce of dried dates has around 100-120 calories and cost $2.60 per pound where I live (NW USA). With dates I can add 500 calories per day to my eating plan for $0.75.

Bananas are pretty good too but that also depends on what part of the country you are in. I have seen them vary from $0.57 to $0.89 per pound (non-organic) to well over $1.00 per pound organic. The trick with bananas is some stores unload them as "old" for a discount when they are actually ripe. Most people only buy yellow or yellow w/ bits of green bananas when you actually want them when they look like the back of grandma's hands (brown age spots). The brown spotted bananas are ripe. The store that I use sells them for almost 60% discount when they start to get spots ($0.37/lb).

With some fruits- fresh being best of course - they can be had for much lower cost per pound in the freezer case. When I shop I basically have to consider three different stores to get the best bang for the buck as prices change and sales occur on different products at different times.

I know the idea is to keep 80-10-10 but you can also look for prices on raw nuts and seeds. They can sometimes be onsale and result in a great calorie per dollar exchange, but your fat & protein will pull you away from 80-10-10. However, keep in mind that eating clean and raw, even varying from 80-10-10, will put your health light years beyond SAD so don't let the idea of varying from 80-10-10 stop you. Some days we you will be right on target, other days your fats & proteins might be higher than needed but in the end, that is ok until you get the kind of income that you need to support the eating style in your region.

Until I get more cash flowing in I have to stick mostly to non-organics but as time goes by I will begin to add more organics in to the diet.

Just wash ALL your fruits and veggies well and eat raw whenever you can.
