A born again Christian trying to find biblical facts!
I have a father and a few friends that are like me; Christians saved by the grace of God in need of some cold hard facts. I've been asked "If meat is so bad for us then why did God allow us and tell us to go a head and eat it?"
I've found some scripture from the old testament, before the flood, stating that we should eat herbs and plants as our meat. But what about Christ's earthy ministry? What about after the flood? It was permitted right? And if it was so bad why didn't Christ tell us to not eat meat.
I of course feel AMAZING staying away form the stuff and I don't think I'll ever eat it again.
So please I'd love to hear back from fellow saved, bible believing Christians.

Comment by Peter Csere on November 5, 2012 at 2:49am It's easy. After the flood, food was scarce, so God said "y'all can eat meat now." However, some interpret that passage to mean that God only allowed consumption of offal (animals that were already dead.)
After that there are numerous examples of vegans in the bible.
Your friends are just interpreting it the way they please. So you can interpret it the way you please.
Remember, most of the bible was written by meat-eaters.
God "allows" EVERYTHING to happen as a means of spiritual growth. Modern Christians hold the conflicting beliefs that (1) God is all-powerful (2) Satan is NOT under God's control since Satan causes things like murder, rape, etc. But if God does not control Satan and allow these bad things to happen, then God is not all-powerful. Ancient Christians held far more esoteric views, much more similar to eastern religions, but of course these Christians were killed by egoistic followers of more diluted, modern schools of Christianity. God allows humans to kill and eat animals just like he causes babies to be born and people to hug each other. The concepts of "good" and "evil" do not exist for a being that encompasses the entire universe - these are primitive dualistic concepts created and enforced for survival purposes by our reptilian brain and/or amygdala.

Comment by Anna Elsbernd on October 14, 2012 at 8:58am Well... this may have already been said, but if alcohol/drugs/rape/murder/etc. are also very bad for "most" people, why did and does God also allow them to be consumed/experienced? Furthermore, McDonald's and endless hours of TV - also not beneficial to mankind but still are a part of many lives. I'm not personally religious, but for those who do believe in God and whatnot, maybe meat, along with all of these other things, exist and are consumed as a means of teaching. When a person learns how bad they feel after sitting around all day eating terrible food, they are growing, because they now have the power, or at least more of the power, of introspection. To me, that is priceless. Just some friendly ideas!

Comment by Andrea on October 13, 2012 at 11:37pm Steve Adams spot on! We shouldn't be interpreting the bible literally. It's a problem I've seen with most people and then they become so dogmatic with they're wrong implications. The bible for me is just a tool to inspire me to do my best in achieving my goals and loving and connecting to everyone and everything around me, not as a how-to, life101, rules-set-in-stone kind of book.

Comment by GeorgeTheFruitarian on October 13, 2012 at 9:15pm Hi Merissa, I'm no Christian but I'm pretty sure, that meat was defined as fruits and vegetables. Fruit Flesh ;-) Where does it come from?
The second counter question is: If God allow us to eat meat, why is it bad for us, and why we feel so great on a low fat raw vegan diet? :D just my two cents – God gave us senses and a brain to make our own decisions.
Love, George
Comment by PJ on October 13, 2012 at 12:46pm I was raised a preacher's kid. Here's something that I heard once:
"In the beginning God made man, and then he proceeded to do the same."
People are crazy everywhere, try not to spend too much time rationalizing life in the Bible... it's only English, after all.
Comment by Sara Maynard on October 13, 2012 at 12:13pm Hi Merissa, you also must look at the context of when each book was written, because as we are not under the ancient Israeli sacrifical law, and covenant they were under back in the old testament. Therefore we have the freedom to choose meat or not, and it's not a sin. However, back in the Old Testament, the remnant of Israel who remained faithful to God didn't eat meat, as it was a requirement of their covenant with God, but they were very healthy, I would assume that's one of the reasons why they lived such long lives. When I was younger I went to an SDA church, some were vegetarian/vegan because of biblical reasons, some for personal health reasons. I'm transitioning to 100% HCRV lifestyle, but I think it's upto the individual, and what makes you function and live life to your fullest potential. :)
God bless you Merissa!! :) xoxo
