30 Bananas a Day!

MY status on facebook:

"The beef industry has contributed to more American deaths than all the wars of this century, all natural disasters, and all automobile accidents combined. If beef is your idea of "real food for real people" you'd better live real close to a real good hospital." Neal Barnard MD

This guy I know who is a going to school to be a doctor replied:

Such a bold statement. The difference is people have the option to consume red meat (every meal) just as one has the choice to smoke cigarettes or drink alcohol. Cannot blame the industry when it is the consumer's fault. People that get in... accidents or war casualties, or natural disasters typically do not have that choice. Yes, over consumption of red meat is bad. But there are many beneficial attributes to consuming meat. There are links to colon cancer, myocardial infarctions, etc. to high fat/unhealthy diets. I think it is much better to educate the masses about proper eating habits and exercise than to make bold statements. Eating a hamburger is not going to kill you. However a continued unhealthy diet can cause long term health problems as well has unfortunate sequelae.

I'd just tell him that he's entitled to his opinion, but the figures don't lie. Dr Barnard's statement is correct. Whether he ignores the figures or not is purely up to him.

Who has told the consumer to eat meat, smoke cigarettes and to drink alchohal but the billion dollar industries who profit from them. I haven't had to see a doctor for years because of health issues, I guess this could scare someone wanting to become a doctor

You contradict yourself when you say eating a hamburger is not going to kill you...but an unhealthy diet can cause long term health problems. Hamburgers are not healthy...so they will utltimately lead to long term health problems. Which usually lead to death.

Karla, no one could predict the long term factors in any of those. In fact, meat and even cigarettes were considered a delicacy and a privileged to be obtained. After the cause and the problems, the industries saw they could benefit, so the...y did. You cannot blame the industry for trying to become richer, that is like telling a store they cannot increase prices to make profit. The stupidity of the average consumer and the naive attitude of others is causing self-inflicted problems on people's own health. People should tale initiative on themselves to strive for a better life, not blame industries. Hamburgers are not unhealthy. If you consume a 100% all beef patty, There are plenty of health benefits. Eating a well balanced diet (including red meat in portions) will not kill you, in fact it will make you healthier. And its not the hamburger that I was referring to, I was talking about low fiber diets, high sugar intake, over-consumption, lack of vegetables and fruits, etc. You twisted my words clever one. I have never had to go to a doctor for a health scare. So I will continue to learn to become a physician, so I can better educated people. Doctor doesn't mean to heal, it means to teach. The role of a physician is to do both, so even if you don't come in for a diet related problem, there are many things people do need help with.
