A few months ago I joined the the 30Bad group Girl Gone Raw, a group which many of you will know discourages the use of make up and other beauty products, and promotes embracing one's natural beauty.
I've never been very interested in hair and make up, even when I was an impressionable teenager surrounded by peroxide blondes with fake tans. While I do think this was largely due to the fact that I'm just far too lazy to put that much effort into applying make up or doing anything to my hair, I have also long been of the opinion that girls actually look better without any make up on or products in their hair.
I think it's pretty absurd how much money and effort people around me put into plastering foundation all over their faces and getting their hair chemically straightened, and for what? It's a case of just another chemical product designed to address problem symptoms. Got bad skin because you eat a crap diet? Here have this toxic skin cream! Bad breath from dairy products? Here eat these mints containing carcinogenic artificial sweeteners! It is nonsensical to me how people can think they need this stuff.
When I started 811 I already avoided make up or any annoying hair products, but I decided that I wanted to go even further to really embrace the whole "natural beauty" ideal. First I decided not to use shampoo and conditioner anymore. Getting rid of conditioner was easy, but shampoo was a bit more challenging. I still have to clean my hair with bicarb soda and a bit of salt about twice a week, but I haven't used shampoo in about 2 months now. I also can't remember when I last used anything on my face (aside from the occasional coconut oil) and my skin has never looked better. I use natural soap (vegan) and will not buy a new bottle after this runs out. A few weeks ago I was in a real purging mood so I decided to throw out all my make up. I never used it anyway and it was probably all toxic and tested on animals, so in the bin it went. I also got rid of all my perfumes after reading this article: http://www.ecomall.com/greenshopping/hrfragrance.htm
At the moment the only beauty product I use is a very small amount of a deodorant made from organic essential oils, and I doubt I will buy another bottle after I have used up the current one. There have so far been no complaints about any unpleasant odour and I haven't noticed that my hair has been overly greasy. In fact (and please don't judge me) I really don't feel the need to shower all that often. My skin seems to be clean all the time, especially when I wake up in the morning.
It feels really liberating to not need any of this stuff anymore. I love having an empty shelf in the bathroom! When I go on holiday I bring my toothbrush and that's it. It's also liberating to not be subscribing to the notion that women's bodies have to be altered in order to live up to someone's definition of an acceptable appearance. It makes me so sad to think of all the women and girls out there who have been conditioned to believe they need magic products to make them attractive. How can we expect to look our best when our diets consist of rotting animal flesh and secretions? When you eat clean living foods your mind and body become clean too. And when your body is healthy and happy you radiate health and beauty.
So stop worrying about what you look like and start worrying about what you're doing to your body to help it look its best. You only get out what you put in.
