I am planning on cycling across the country next summer and was wondering if anyone new what i would need to do to train for it and prepare. i have two bikes downstairs that are going to be getting fixed up soon and my boyfriend and i are going to be riding them a lot but im not sure if they are the right bikes to use for this or not... but i know there must be other things that i need to do to prepare for it. I would be traveling from Maryland to Eureka California. I was also wondering if anyone would want to do it with me, since it might not be a good idea to do it by myself the first time. If anyone has any pointers or suggestions or wants to go on this adventure with me please let me know.

Comment by mathyou on March 25, 2012 at 5:36am Are you going through Iowa? You should bring your boyfriend too, so I can meet 2 fruitbats for the price of one! I'd let you guys crash at my place for a day or two if you need a break from the bikes. We have a Trader Joe's, so you could stock up on dates before you kept heading West. Message me if you're interested.
That's the only tip I have is to meet a bunch of people in advance on your route, so you can have a break, food, and social interaction. Be sweet if you documented the journey on Youtube too!
Also, you might want to invest in a tire changing/repair kit and a compact air pump.
Freelee biked across Australia, so you could pick her brain for other not so obvious tips.
Wishing you the best on your journey!

Comment by Brittany Johnson on March 24, 2012 at 2:35pm Thank you Clara, i have already started training for it i have been doing a lot of walking lately and i will soon start jogging i am working out with someone else and she doesn't run a lot so i am trying to stay at her pace but after i get the bikes fixed i will start riding the Baltimore Annapolis trail until i can do it in less than a day. i have a few friends that are giving me suggestions and they are being very supportive. I just hope that some one with experience in biking can give me some suggestions because i'm planning on doing this by this time next year. i have already looked up the rout i would need to take i am also planning on taking pictures of the scenery along the way.
Comment by Clara on March 24, 2012 at 7:13am I have never done this, but would love to someday! Have fun! Hope you get some good advice!
