Recap: I'm a pastor in smalltown Texas. I'm trying veganism this month to evaluate how I feel. I'm shooting for as much hclf raw vegan as is convenient this month. Last night I hit a breakthrough as my theologies, plans, prayer, and goals just merged with this whole "health" model. With a lifestyle such as this, I will be able to be mentally, physically, and spiritually capable of serving the Church as a pastor for longer in my life. So instead of retiring at 65, I could conceivably continue working at least until 75 or even longer. The call of the minister is not for 35 years of service but instead of a life of service. This lifestyle will enable me to give at least ten more years vocationally to God and the Church. The only reason that pastors normally retire is that they cannot physically or mentally continue with preaching, visiting, planning, and all of the other things. The good pastor makes a tradition of giving the best years of their life and when they cannot give any more, they are supposed to ride off into the sunset to life out the debilitating rest of their lives as their congregation continues to grow and thrive. Each of us on this website has our primary reasons for our diet. I'm still going to evaluate diet at the end of the month but if it is working, I have my reason ready. Blessings -Jody

I took out a library book recently and it had a biblical quote from what it says is a reputably overlooked book of the bible the Essene Gospel of Peace.
'But I say to you kill neither men nor beasts, nor yet the food which goes into your mouths. For if you eat living food, the same will quicken you, but if you kill your food the dead food will kill you also. For life comes only from life, and death comes always from death. For everything which kills your foods, kills your bodies also. And your foods are, even as your spirits, likewise, become what your thoughts are. Therefore eat not anything which fire, or frost, or water has destroyed. Fire burned, frozen and rotten foods will burn, freeze and rot your body also.'
I thought this was pretty cool. Quoted from Jesus. It's too bad spiritual texts are a little bit muddled. For this to be typically unheard of is a bit sad. Anyway, I liked it, I'm sure you will too.

Carbs for Christ indeed!
Says right in the beginning of the Bible, we're supposed to eat fruits and veggies. I don't need much more convincing than that!
Comment by Fruitniss on January 18, 2013 at 9:37am There is a book that you might like, "Dominion" by Matthew Scully. It is bible based and it will help you connect the ethical reasonings for a vegan diet as set forth in the bible.
Comment by Chris P. on January 17, 2013 at 8:00pm Regardless of how many years you may add to your life, cutting out processed foods and meat, cheese, etc, will make you start to feel better and better which will lead you to wanting to move more, which in turn will make you feel even better.
The results can be really something. For a person wired like me, who is friendly and likes people but for the most part just wants to be left alone, being on this style of eating had me seeking out contact, seeking ways to help, to connect.
It had a profound impact on my life and I would think that the possibility for assisting in being a pastor would be very large!
Comment by Peter on January 17, 2013 at 1:05pm Welcome Pastor,
Have you heard of Hallelujah Acres?
They promote a mostly raw vegan diet which they believe is 'God's way'.
Comment by Jon Fergus on January 17, 2013 at 10:27am Jody, I commend you on this breakthrough. It certainly puts health and lifestyle into a whole new perspective when we're able to link it to our primary purpose in life.
We vary widely in our beliefs on this forum and have had many an interesting discussion on religion. In terms of HCRV and its relation to Christianity, I would tend to look at it also in terms of our duty to respect and care for the temple we've been given, through which we work in this world. It becomes easy, I think, from a religious standpoint, to tend towards dismissing bodily health, particularly when we are generally more focused on the health of the soul. But more and more I come to see just how intertwined these two are while we are here on Earth (and I think this position is equally applicable in terms of other religious beliefs). As soon as we look at the entirety of creation as being divine ("divinity in every atom"), then we can see health as not solely a personal endeavor, but, in fact, a means of daily worship. In this sense every breath becomes sacred, every meal becomes sacred, exercise becomes sacred, all life does, in fact. And we want our activities to live up to that divinity.
So to me there's good reason for Christians, particularly pastors and other church leaders, to invest some time in true health and wellness, and to explore the path of veganism as an actual expression of their faith. I hope you'll find the health you're looking for through this venture, as you would have much opportunity to be an even greater positive influence on others. :)
Comment by Windlord on January 17, 2013 at 10:27am Excellent, Jody!
May you be a shining example to your congregation and anyone to whom you may be called to minister, to prioritize their physical health as much as they do their spiritual.
While he hasn't posted here lately, you may find great encouragement for your journey in the numerous blogs my friend Todd has written here:
