Hello-brand new member here.
My wife and I have been inching toward to 80-10-10 for a while. To be perfectly honest I've been inching more slowly than she--early returns are mostly good. I can certainly say I don't suffer from cravings when I eat enough fruit.
I am about to participate in a biggest loser competition at my gym and I actually plan to use this experience as a test of a full-on commitment to 80-10-10 and, perhaps, a demonstration of the impact of this lifestyle to others.
A couple of thoughts, or questions.
I do like working out and I think I work out with a fair bit of intensity considering the fact I'm 58. As part of the competition, however, I will be working out with a personal trainer. And by past experience a trainer will kick up my intensity by several notches. So I'm curious regarding the impact of the High Carb Low Fat diet on my ability to work out really hard and recover.
My goal is to lose 25 pounds over the course of the contest (12 weeks I think.) It would be awesome if all that weight loss would be fat and awesomer if I could even gain a pound or two of lean muscle mass.
I don't know if that is possible.
Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Train safe, train in a way that makes it pretty much impossible to be injured. better slow and steady last the race, than fast results and crash burn. I've done that mistake 6 years ago, and was out of training for most of that time.
Cool if you win the contents, but don't risk anything to do it :)
Stay safe, Stay fruity,
Comment by Luk on May 19, 2012 at 7:38am be careful to work really hard - if you are not used to it you may get injuries and/or disapoitment from your results. Especially with some trainer that might push you over the edge. There is no hurry and the same in losing weight. When you live corectly the excess weight will come off but really it should be the last thing you care about, health needs to go first. To do anything focused just on losign weight is shortsighted. So my advice to you is to train smart, carb up and focus on health :)

Comment by Caitlin Anne on May 18, 2012 at 3:49pm 80-10-10 is going to give you tons of energy for intense work outs, and as long as you eat a LOT of calories you should be able to shred fat and build lean muscle with ease. I don't know the exact formula for figuring out how many calories you will need, someone more knowledgeable on here will though I'm sure, but it's probably going to be 4,000 or more depending on your height, weight, work out intensity, duration, and frequency. If you can give more details about the workout you will be doing I'm sure someone can give you a good estimate.
I recommended heading over to Foodnsport.com and buying a book (Nutrition and Athletic Performance) or a DVD for some guidance and motivation. Very valuable info there.
Good luck :)
