I WANT SALT!
I can't believe how strong these cravings are.. it started on day 3 and I keep fighting them by eating more bananas, but this is not going away. I am eating 50 small bananas a day, around 4000ccal and Drinking 3-4L of water.. after all of that I crave pizza and pickles and a spoon full of salt and everything else salt related.. This is bad.. cause this is really getting under my skin and making me feel guilty and sneaky and all kinds of things I don't wanna be... I haven't cheated, really don't have any other problem staying on bananas, I enjoy mono fruit meals, but even after I am full I still want salt..
Just to recap: I was born and lived by the Black sea (very salty), ate lots of seaweeds and seafood back when I was kid and a teenager and obviously there was a lot of salt in our water and air. I've been a sad eater for about 10years after moving to USA and for almost 2 years now I have been 100 %Raw, did a 92 days juice feast to heal tumors and severe pancreatitis, both of which were healed and have not returned. I have been eating purely 80/10/10-90/5/5 for over 2 months now and this have been an ongoing battle with salt.. I was able to completely remove everything else, why is this so hard? Is it possible that sense I was exposed to a natural high salt environment from birth, that my body actually needs it? Is it possible that I went through so many changes lately that I am just not ready to let it go yet? I don't remember ever eating white table salt (well.. ofcource it was in some of that processed junk I used to stuff my face with), but when homecooked and raw it was always grey/ unprocessed sea salt.. not sure if it makes a difference though..
I feel like jumping off the island and eating some high sodium veggies just to get away from this horrible craving. Instead of really enjoying this pure energy, I just feel more depressed.. and I just ate 20 bananas and can't even breath, but still want salt.. Anyone has any tips? HELP! I'm all ears ..

Karolina!
I personally love bananas and they are my main staple but up around 20 they get boring and I want something savory. I'm not into banana islands but I found something that quickly addresses those sodium cravings:
I basically juice 4 bunches of celery a week (all at once for convenience and thus consistency) and drink it throughout the week during periods of the day where the thought of sticking a fork in my eye is more appealing than eating another banana. I hate eating whole celery as a mono meal and because I'm already getting enough fiber from all my other foods, I don't feel that all that extracellular fiber I'm missing from the celery is causing a problem. Celery juice quickly gets that potassium/sodium ratio a little smaller and the digestion is extremely "cheap"!
This instantly resets my "banana switch" and soon enough I'm good to go again with the fruit. It's basically about balancing out my electrolytes so that I end up feeling "complete" (sweet + savory). I also make Roger Haeske's veggie stews (once almost every other day) for a major mineral/greens/veggie/sodium boost.
Comment by Karolina Neyrus on June 19, 2012 at 6:35am Connie, thanks for encouragement. I've been also enjoying some banana ice cream and banana milk (bananas+water) once in awhile, but I love the texture as is and really enjoy them.
Was able to get about 15lbs of ripe bananas today for 2$ from a farmer market seller, who had few boxes of ripe spotted bananas, she said I can stop by tomorrow and pick up whatever she doesn't sell today .. Not sure if I need all that many, my freezer is still pretty full, but it's hard to pass on deals like this.
Comment by Connie Ca on June 19, 2012 at 3:21am Hi! Congrats on NOT eating the salt! There was a period in my raw food journey in which I craved salt as well. I found that by having a little more discipline for an extended period of time kicked these cravings altogether. It's like when you stop eating junk food for a long time you no longer crave junk food...
I'm on day 3 of banana island! Also, I don't know if you do this, but when I get bored of bananas, I freeze them and find the texture extremely appealing :)
Comment by Karolina Neyrus on June 19, 2012 at 1:57am Thank you all for your wonderful comments and suggestions! After much struggle yesterday I decided to stick to it and kick the salt for good. The whole reason I decided to do banana island is to ditch the salt, so why give up now? I have enough bananas for 2 more days and I will be on a hunt for some more bananas today. Not sure when I am going to stop yet, but I am not giving salt a power over me.. GO BANANAS!
Comment by debbie driver on June 18, 2012 at 8:56pm Hi Karolina!
I had the same experience as you beginning of may 2012. I was so looking forward to doing banana island, I was gonna go for a month... but cravings kick in after the first week, I had had bananas for 4 days solid that ate some dates as I was out, then at the weekend I had salad, avocado then got a taste for houmous and then bread,,, joy! ruined my whole experience and I felt like s***! What i decided to do was start to have a really big green juice, as well as bananas and I really feel this is helping me and my cravings. I am still not fully ready to do bananas on there own, however I will do bananas and green juice & greens. I am drinking a green juice as I type I have got in it, whole bunch of celery, 1 lettuce head, bunch of coriander, pineapple, apple, a bag of kale and bag of spinach, cucumber plus some garlic. Now I know the garlic is not 811, however this big green drink is stopping me with eating s***e food. dont know if any of this helps but the green juice had massively helped me :) good luck!
i've tried to mono eat watermelon, only got up to about 9 days. the fruit can be REALLY powerful i find. sometimes the veggies bring you back to earth.
Comment by Karolina Neyrus on June 18, 2012 at 1:30pm Thanks Stephanie, I might get some spinach and celery tomorrow, I'm wondering if I am missing some minerals from greens?
Comment by Karolina Neyrus on June 18, 2012 at 10:43am Thanks Juliana, I'm not depressed from bananas, I am getting depressed from this craving that I can't seems to shake off.. I've read some of Freelees and DRs responses about salt. They keep saying to eat more fruits and that strong cravings are natural as part of withdrawals.. so perhaps I should just stick it out and may be let salt go completely.. Just so wish I didn't feel like crap doing it ..
Comment by Juliana on June 18, 2012 at 10:38am theres nothing wrong with eating veggies, infact they're awesome!. I understand you have made a committment to banana island, but sometimes its better to relax a little. You have already done so well! If its veggies that you crave, then eat them. don't make yourself dperessed by eating more bananas. hope this helps =)
