Once in awhile I've had a day where none of the fruit I've so carefully purchased ends up to be spectacular.
Today, what is usually one of my favorite combos (blended canteloupe and orange --- bad combining, yes I know) turned out acrid and difficult to even drink... and I can't figure out why. Then I made a banana peach smoothie to take to work, and it too turned out acrid (I think that although the bananas had brown spots, the stems were still green, and they hay have not been totally ripe -- the peaches could have sat one or two more days as well.)
I thought things would take a better turn when, on my way to work, I stopped by a grocery store and found some ripe mamey sapote. I've never tried this fruit and it was one on my fruit "bucket list," so I bought three (insanely expensive). I'm eating one as we speak and it is perfectly ripe, soft and sweet.... but its also a little overwhelming. A little too rich and sweet, in fact I can only finish 1/4 of it (size of large softball). Tastes just like spicy overly sweet pumpkin custard.
Boy, am I learning how important it is to have ample ripe and great quality sweet fruit around.
