30 Bananas a Day!

Greetings!

I was wondering if there are any HCRV peeps out there that backpack...for more than a day. Or even a day, I guess.

How do you eat???  We are new to backpacking as we just moved to the Rocky Mountains from the beautiful plains of Kansas.  What we are learning first and foremost is PACK LIGHT.  We are used to car camping. You know, fill your car with everything... including the kitchen sink and head out to nature for a week.  Now, we have large backpacks which should hold all we need  for up to a week.

However, fruit, in all it's watery goodness is quite heavy. And takes up a LOT of space.

What to do?

Also, I'm new to this lifestyle too, so I could be missing something glaringly obvious. If so, be gentle. :-)

Normally, on trips like this a majority of food has been dehydrated, to be reconstituted when needed.

Any ideas, suggestions, experiences would be appreciated. It's getting more beautiful out every day and we're itchin' to take a trip.

Much love,

Carrie

I really have no idea. I have plans to go on a backpacking trips for 4 months starting in May. We will be mostly camping out (in bear country), so everything will need to be light enough to carry back to camp on the odd run back into town and small enough to fit in a sack.

Most people recommend dried fruit, but I think for more then I day that would taste disgusting. I also have bad teeth so painful as well. I'll probably end up resorting to cooked rice, millet, potatoes, etc. Really hope I figure something out though, because all those taste terrible as well.

I know for myself I really miss backpacking.  I just can't go that long without good food and it's not worth it to me to feel like crap later on.  Can you imagine how heavy your pack would be carrying four days of fresh fruit.  Is it even possible?

@ Perry: Too lucky!  About how long would you say YOU dehydrate for? For your chewy goodness?

@ Sofie: Awesome! You're only a handful of hours away. I feel like we are the only people who wanna be healthy around here ( but it's a small town). We (my husband, and our 2 puppies) would love to go backpacking. We could even plan for a place to meet in the middle :-) There are tons of places, just out my backdoor here.

Yes. Dates, definitely. Frozen nana smoothies a good idea, much lighter than packing those big ol' skins. Probably take some sprouted buckwheat granola (raw) and some nuts and raisins...

Still open to suggestions ;-) We are gonna do a one-nighter very soon, so we'll have to pack for about 2 days of nutrients. I'll update how we do.

and to answer ur question i would load up on dates, and maybe even prepare banana smoothis ahead of time ... if you froze them .. you would have fresh banana smoothies on day 2

The last two night trip I did was fueled on mostly dried bananas. I try to dry them to the point where they are still chewy and easy to eat. Also at one spot I woke to see we were camped near an apple tree in full bloom.  I don't think I've tasted a better apple!  Free and straight from the tree; you can't beat that.

Southern Rockies. Right on the edge of the far west of the San Luis Valley. So I get beautiful desert on one side and lush National Forest on the other. I count myself lucky. :-)
