30 Bananas a Day!

About to jump down the rabbit hole.

There's a countdown app on my phone that is telling me 3 days until going raw (May 1st). What started out as a research for having meatless May, lead me to the high carb raw vegan diet. It just seems like the best fit for me, as in, something that I could maintain for an extended period.

A few events this year have sort of paved the way, starting with a trip to New York in January to visit a longtime friend who just happened to be vegan.  I tried new foods, had some really good discussion about his diet choices, and he recommended watching Forks Over Knives. It was at least another month before I sat down in front of my laptop and watched it, along with Food Inc. Those two movies made it clear that cutting out animal products was a high priority goal for my near future.

I checked out like 15 vegetarian/vegan cookbooks from the library to try and get some meal ideas. Not only do I lack skills in the kitchen, but I'm a lifelong picky eater so trying new foods can be a struggle. It's frustrating to have the enthusiasm to try new things, but your tongue and your brain finds great displeasure in new smells and textures.

The first time the raw diet really caught my attention was years ago. On the blog of a very talented musician he posted about his desire to return to a raw diet because of the success he had in eliminating his symptoms of depression. Depression is something I've been dealing with since the age of 12 and have been off and on anti-depressants for the last 10 years. His experience always stuck with me but in the past I lacked motivation to change. I visited this musicians site just recently and in the forums he discusses that he follows an 811 diet with great success.

I've been doing a lot of reading online and watching videos on YouTube to learn as much as I can. I do plan on getting the 80/10/10 book soon, but this paycheck I blew my shopping budget on a pair of Vibram Fivefinger shoes for running. Today I did a big shopping trip to the closest Farmer's Market and a stop at Whole Foods to pick up fruit. I know there will be lots of challenges and I plan to write all about them here, but it's something I am very excited about and motivated to do.
