Ergh. Thought I'd share this link http://www.wellandgoodnyc.com/2012/07/16/the-5-best-and-worst-nutri... #11/13 = a Greens Superfood bar.
The entire article is about the top 5 nutrition bars in terms of best vs worse. (I read these because I find them interesting). Anyways, I quote:
"This bar is a Code Red sugar overdose (26 grams). Fructose, found here in high quantity in dates and dried cranberries, is one of the leading contributors to our nation’s obesity epidemic, and an arch-nemesis of Hundt's. “Fruit sugar makes you fat faster than regular sugar because it overloads the liver,” says Hundt. "Since it can only be metabolized by the liver, one third of fructose calories are automatically stored as fat." Not to mention that fructose leads to overindulgence because it doesn’t signal the brain that the stomach is full. All this kind of defeats the point of buying it for the wheatgrass and broccoli extracts."
Did you just choke on your banana smoothie? (either laughing or from a shocked reaction) Because I sure did...
Fruit didn't make our nation fat. Try telling the average Joe that, though.
What are your thoughts on this!?! Or can it only be summed up as ridiculous? What is your opinion on the real way your liver handles sugar?

Comment by Lisa Dee on August 16, 2012 at 3:17am But on the SAD diet, the average Westerner picks up a banana ~once in a while~. Sheesh, first people crab about getting their 10 servings of fruit and veggies a day - "IMPOSSIBLE! CAN'T BE DONE!" and then turn around in the same breath and say "oh, yeah, bananas are the reason there is obesity in this country!!!"
Make up your mind, hoi polloi.
With respect to fructose, I have no idea how it is digested by the liver. I just know it makes one slim. However, I was just reading a thread here:
http://www.30bananasaday.com/forum/topics/atkins-vs-paleo?id=268407...
Peter Csere says:
"Protip for researching fructose: Use scientific literacy. People will describe metabolic processes without talking about rates, amounts, etc. So someone will say "fructose is converted to triglycerides in the liver" (or something like that) and you will freak out and automatically assume that
(1) A LOT is converted, or
(2) A significant amount is converted, or
(3) Enough to make you get REALLY FAT AND UNHEALTHY is converted.
When no mention of quantity or conversion efficiency was even made. Truth is, you cannot make ANY assumption at ALL from that with no quantitative values given. I could say "lettuce converts to cyanide and arsenic in the gall bladder" which would make no sense but even if it did, no amounts given means you really haven't learned anything useful at all.
So, in your fructose quest, make sure you actually learn something useful and not just a bunch of random observations of biochemical processes"

Comment by Craig Plunkett on August 16, 2012 at 1:35am You must be able to order dates and cranberries over the till at Mcdonalds now.
