I grew up with a naturopath for a granddad who got my brothers and I off to a good start nutritionally. None of us were immunised and anti-biotics were banned. If we got a dose of flu, we fasted. I have thus always felt strongly about whole foods and cleansing.

While I was in London having fun for 12 years I neglected my health a little and when my husband and I started building our family I got my wake up call to get more serious about it again.

Unfortunately my thyroid had suffered and my hypo-thyroidism was picked up during my first pregnancy. I gave in to taking synthetic thyroxin as I didn't want to jeopardise the pregnancy and have had two more subsequent babies so have not been too keen to quit just yet and try the natural route (doctors tell me that it's incurable but I don't trust doctors anyway eventhough they have shocking scaremongering tactics that often work!). I heard about this site on a youtube video about hypo-thyroidism.

I am done being an oven now and recently read The China Study, after which I decided to change my entire family's eating habits - we're removing all animal-related foods from our diets. Now that my passion for nutrition has been sparked once again, I have been surfing the net and finding great sites like yours which I will be retuning to for sure but I have a few questions to ask and that's why I've signed up.

Anyway, I'm sure my little introduction has gone on long enough. Vicki

Hi Vikki

enjoyed reading your profile information. I have 3 daughters, 9,5 and 3 I found raw veganism just after my last daughter when I was diagnosed with colitis. The diet has pretty much cured the colitis for my and I have changed how we eat as a family. I do struggle a bit with the children but their diets are way better than their peers. Their understanding is very impressive although putting it into practice is difficult for them but that will come with time. Would love to hook up with you when in NZ, I can encourage you to stay on the wagon :)

Waiheke is tight.  I didn't realize how much so until I moved down here and realized how many connections we had on Waiheke.  We lived there for 15 years and my husband knows everyone.  So you were probably right to stay on the Shore. At least you don't have to drop $120 not including the kids just to go to town.

Man, you have had an interesting life.  You grandfather was so ahead of his time.  No antibiotics, no vaccines?  That is awesome.

I reckon our biggest challenge as Kiwis is going to be keeping each other enthused over winter.  Right now is awesome, pit fruits, new season apples and lots of yum veg.  This winter?  I am trying not to panic.

How old are your kids?  I have two boys, 17 and 19.  Coolest kids ever.  The 19 year old is the main reason we went vegan three years ago and none of us have looked back since.  You said you changed your family's diet-are you all raw vegans?

Phew, that was a wee rant.  Just answer when you have a mo.  Hopefully talk to you soon.
