I am somewhat new to the HCRV lifestyle, but certainly not to the quest for healthy living. I have been a vegetarian for over two years, and a vegan for almost as long. I became vegetarian/vegan for health AND ethical reasons (more ethical than health, originally). Around the same time that I began doing this, however, I developed an eating disorder (anorexia). Although this was largely due to psychological reasons, it was also, in a relatively small part, due to the fact that I have a naturally high metabolism and also began running (up to 4 miles over the summer before I started high school), which boosted it. Unlike some individuals with eating disorders, I wasn't out to loose weight--I was trying to eat "as healthily as possible." Over the next year, my eating disorder progressed until I was down to an extremely unhealthy weight, and my parents were forced to send me to an inpatient treatment facility. When I first arrived, they wouldn't even take me in because of my dangerously low heart rate (in the low thirties, and dipping into the twenties), and sent me to the hospital where I could be closely monitored with equipment, etc., and where I was tube-fed (and/or fed orally) a large amount of calories and forced to lie in a hospital bed all day. The doctors actually thought that I was hiding food somehow because of how little I was gaining weight on a 3000, 4000, and even 5000-calorie diet (I'm 5'4''). Once I was finally allowed back at the facility, the doctor and nutritionist struggled to force enough food into me to get my weight up, and they were somewhat frustrated with my stubbornness when it came to veganism and healthy eating (these were seen as part of the eating disorder). It took another three or four gruelling months to get me up to my ideal weight. I left treatment with a 3000+ calorie prescription and a meal plan with SAD food ratios (a certain amount of servings of each food group each meal and snack). However, I found this difficult: I was almost always sickly full, my digestive system was terribly upset, and I felt horrible overall. In my search for a better eating pattern, I eventually transitioned toward a more raw lifestyle, and soon came upon fruitarianism, which I immediately embraced. I absolutely love eating this way. It has helped me to overcome my struggle with eating enough for my body to thrive (so, I am now able to maintain my [healthy] weight). I feel much less full, and hardly ever sick to my stomach like I once did. I love the simplicity of it, the logic of it all, the way it makes my body feel (energetic, whole, natural), and--of course--the fact that this diet (not as in weight-loss diet, as in lifestyle) is composed mainly of fruit: my absolute favorite kind of food! I am so, so grateful for finding HFRV. I don't know how I could live without it.

I love reading books, pretty much any books I can get my hands on, as long as they interest me (but I especially like literary fiction). I couldn't pick a favorite if you asked me. This kind of goes with that territory, but I also enjoy learning as much as I can. Other key pieces and passions include running, exercising in general, nature (incl. caring for and connecting with nature), singing, creativity and imagination, and the little things.

Negative thoughts creeping in...

Posted on March 17, 2013 at 8:45am 4 Comments

Today is one of those occasional days when I really get down on myself. They don't happen as often as they used to, but I guess that they're still here.

I've been trying to work on my mental health lately, since I had neglected it for so long. But I find myself pulled in opposite directions--between the ambitious, driven side and the side that encourages relaxation, rest, no stress. I call the former the lazy side. And I don't think that I like it. At all.

At times…

The Best Salad Dressing I've Ever Had

This impromptu recipe is amazingly simple (duh.) and is absolutely SCRUMDILIUMPTIOUS. (Yes, I made up that word. If it is actually a word, it certainly is not spelled correctly.) It's sweet and creamy, but with a (very) subtle bite from the green onion. I hope that you enjoy it if you happen to try it out! (:

Ingredients

  • Freshly-squeezed orange juice (or other sweet citrus,…

Hey just wanted to elaborate a little bit more for you since you actually had talked to this dude (didn't think you would have).  When I talked to him on the phone he said that eating 80/10/10 at his place was awesome and that he would provide everything I needed to do so. He was familiar w/ the diet and even said Doug Graham used to be roommates w/ him. I was psyched.

When I got there it was a diff. Story. He would spend abt $40 a week on food for 4 people (def not enough for someone doing hard manual labor all day). And the work I was doing, it was very little farm work and learning about farming and much more like manual labor.

The guy had odd behavior. You would ask him questions and he would just stare at you. Then you would be doing something and out of nowhere he would be yelling at you. Him and I clashed early and often. I didn't have a good experience there nor did the 3 others who were with me at the time.

I've since met others who have been there and didn't exactly have glowing recommendations.

I'm not saying you shouldn't go there, just sharing my experience. Hope that helps. The other farms I've been to are in Hawaii so I can't give you anymore scoop on the south fla scene.
