I was a hardcore Atkins pusher for a long time. Some tenets of that eating style seemed to make sense, like avoiding processed starchy food (bread, your typical pasta, desserts). But eating unlimited amounts of fat and animal protein was something I stuck in the "to be investigated later" mental file, which means animal protein and some fat sounded ok at the time, but tons of it seemed odd. I liked that you didn't need to worry about calories on Atkins as well, but was curious about the idea of not eating as much fruit. I rationalized that point by saying Dr. Atkins means it's ok to get your carbs from produce, just not in the first two weeks of the diet (induction). Anyway, it was a pain in the ass to carry a steak around with me for lunch and soon became easier to fall off the wagon and eat whatever. Then I tried Weight Watchers, which I lost 30 lbs but regained in the last 2 years. Then I tried a low calorie diet with prepackaged foods and lots of exercise. That didn't work, and again I fell of the wagon of maintenance. Then I switched to a "flexatarian" diet with green smoothies, with occasional meat and eggs (but still calorie-counted. I would gorge at night because I ate so lightly through the day. So I then tried the same diet but changed to eating those foods during the day to stave off nighttime hunger and cut off my eating at 5 pm, thinking the bloat feeling the next morning was caused by late time eating. Still not losing weight. I also work out 3-5 times a week for an hour or longer. So now I'm trying 811, raw, vegan foods. I admit, I'm still going to cook some grains (as of the date of this posting) for now because we have a s*** ton of them in the house. So I guess technically I won't be doing 100% raw. This is a major transition and I hope I'm making the right choices. I've spent hours looking over the suggested web sites and watching Durianrider's videos. I still have a million questions though, so I hope to find some answers. I have begun eating a ton of fruit and sticking with low fat, vegan guidelines. I'm excited to feel better in the long run and lose excess weight.

I have some questions. Some of them are specific, some are general. I read the FAQ section but mine are not answered there. I'm sure when I read the 80-10-10 book some will be answered. Questions are mainly about if certain items or practices are good for your health and should be included in diet: What about garlic? Mono eating only? What about green smoothies that combine greens and fruit? What about steamed grains? What about common items in recipes like tamari or tahini? Etc...
Please note that my choice to do HCRV was based on many readings all around the net and watching tons of videos on things that really seem to make sense. I plan to buy the 811 book by Dr. G. and read that as well, but I figure there's no sense in waiting to eat fruit until I get the book, so I'm jumping in now.
