For most of my life I was raised on fast food and soda. It is a really sad beginning because my parents didn't really understand how to raise me and my sisters on a healthy diet. Resultantly, I have struggled with my weight for my entire life. Only through rigorous exercise have I been able to lose weight, which wasn't sustainable in my current lifestyle.
All of my life I have heard that fruits and vegetables are good for you but that was never reflected in the way my family lived and ate. I was never truly educated about physical fitness or diet and I have been struggling my entire life to find a way to sustain my own health. Of course, being raised in the southern United States doesn't help because of our reputation for BBQ, fast food and beer.
In the past year, I have read a lot about different diets. Through reading books like 'Eat to Live', Dr. Ornish's book and various others, I decided to become a vegetarian. After another week, I decided to become a vegan... From that time, I wish I could say that I have never looked back but I reverted to being vegetarian. Unfortunately, I am still overweight in spite of becoming a lot more physically active.
After spending sometime on youtube and looking up raw food diets out of curiosity, I stumbled upon a video of Freelees. Since that time, I have watched many of her videos, the liferegenerator's videos and the RawBrahs. These people have inspired me and allowed me to realize that a LFRV lifestyle is really sustainable.
With all of that in mind, I decided to go LFRV. I threw out all of the cooked food in my house on that day but have since slipped up because of not knowing how to keep grocery costs down.
Now, I am focusing on being LFRV/811!

No, but guitar for sure. I wrote a song for my pineapple tomato last year. It didn't help though, it didn't get enough sun and hardly produced any good tomatoes. It produced a decent song though! I should get that one on Youtube...
Not regularly, but I do plan to spend more time there. I was there in December visiting Megan from EasyToBeRaw, who I just posted a video with from my visit there, actually. Can't wait to go back, the fruit was freakin fantastic.
I'm stoked for heirlooms too! I love growing tomatoes, I like pruning and talking to them. :)
I'm not sure, I've never lived in SoCal, just visited. And I should say, I feel much better about fruit here all of a sudden because I got killer mangoes at Whole Foods yesterday. Fruit is actually great up here, it's really just Jan-Feb and part of March that can be pretty dull, once dates and persimmons leave and summer fruit hasn't arrived. I'm back to being stoked about my diet though, which is good!
Right now it's really boring. Winter stuff like persimmons and citrus has disappeared, and mangoes and summer things aren't here yet. I'm overdosing on bananas. Southern California is amazing right now, but up here in Norcal I'm going a little crazy waiting to enjoy myself more.
Hi Rachel. Turns out I've got waay too much going on this weekend to meet you at YDFM. My tips are:
Get there early to get the best stuff. There are thousands of customers during the weekend and stock can get low towards the end of the day. It's also hard to move through the isles. I would suggest arriving before 10 am if possible.
They don't take credit cards for payment. Only debit cards, checks, and cash.
If you buy any produce cases, make sure to open up the boxes and check every piece of fruit. It's kosher to take out rotten pieces of produce and exchange them for good pieces, especially when buying mangoes. Look on the sign and it will tell you the number of mangoes per box. Mix and match until you get a box full of gems ; )
