In the 1970s-1980s, Nathan Pritikin promoted a low fat cooked vegan diet that was high in grains and starchy food and similar to the DrMcDougall program now. Pritikin had great success with assisting individuals with cardiovascular problems, but not necessarily other degenerative diseases such as arthritis and or cancers.
Of particular interest is chapter 10 "Grains Are for the Birds."
