hey, about ecaps (deans blog question):
I am kind of an experiment in this diet when it comes to long distance/ultra endurance activities. I haven't had anyone really try to do what I am doing in athletics while eating this way. I'm about as hard line as it gets about being 100% low fat raw/fruitarian. I don't suppliment with anything in my regular day activities and it's b/c I really think it's not need - low fat raw fruit/veg. gives you everything you need for regular activities, including working out a lot. BUT - A BIG BUT: I have pushed the limits of what this body can do on this diet, but when it comes to ultra distance, even in not so hot conditions - I have found time and time again that you MUST suppliment with sodium. I have done Ironman's 50k, 100k distance runs etc etc, and when you are going to be moving for a while on your feet at a decent effort you gotta take in sodium. I have done 8 hour runs at a slow pace with no supplimental sodium, but I was eating tons of tomatoes, and craving every bite. I guess you could juice celery and drink it if you have someone crewing you, but for ultra runs, and races where you'll be sweating a lot (even in a hot marathon) you gotta take in salt specifically. I've hit some serious walls and almost blacked out from hyponatremia more than a few times thinking that I didn't need to suppliment with salt, but you MUST. I guess you could eat 20lbs of tomatoes in a 100mile ultra instead of taking some salt pills, but I just take the salt pills. It's my 'one thing' that I find is a must do outside of just sticking with low fat raw. Note: day to day regular training - even 3 hour-4 hour runs at an easy pace I don't need to suppliment salt, but I do eat a ton of tomatoes a day, a ton!

Nick,
Variety is great. But, not usually at the same time. Some fruits combine better with others - and not so well with others. Doug devotes a few pages in 80-10-10 to food combining. You'll really appreciate that book. Provides a lot of clarity about what you're doing.

Since fruits digest so quickly, I'm really only talking about combining at the same meal. I tend to eat mono meals, just for simplicity. For example, a banana smoothie will be 15 to 20 bananas, a cup or so of water, a couple handfuls of ice & blend it. I usually get about 96 ounces out of that.

Hey Nick,
I just checked out your blog. Good stuff. A couple of things caught my eye;
First, your food combinations could create some issues. Be careful with combining sweet fruits (bananas) and citrus (oranges). They typically don't play together nicely in your stomach. I noticed that you are putting together a lot of different things into your smoothies. There should be a lot of info on that around here. Just do a few searches.
Next, I saw that you were unclear about the detox and what's causing that. It's not that you're adjusting to a new diet, it's that your body is finally able to eliminate the toxins that have built up over the years. Now that you are no longer adding toxic food, your body can deal with that build up. Should be a lot of advice on that here too. Just look around.
