My electric company wants to install a "smart meter"...

A couple days ago we got a notice in the mail telling us that our electric meter at our house will be replaced by a "smart meter". See http://refusesmartmeters.com/ and http://smartmetersafety.com/. I've been thinking of trying to stop them from installing it.…See More

Mainstream movies with a pro - fruit / vegan / vegetarian message

The old Disney cartoon movie "The Jungle Book" has lots of fruit in it, including some rare fruits like "paw paw" (mentioned in this classic song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ogQ0uge06o).  Two other cartoon movies which always seemed to me to have a pro-veg message are "Bambi" and "Charlotte's Web". What other pro -frut / veg movies are out there?  I don't mean documentaries...I know there are tons of those.  :)See More

I am a dad, husband, theoretical physicist, ultramarathon runner, organic gardener, and juggler.

I gradually transitioned from a typical American diet to a raw vegan diet in the years 2003-2007. Since the fall of 2007, I've been 100% raw vegan. I've been on a "no overt fat" experiment since November 2008, and on a "100% fruit" experiment since December 2009. Even though I have a pretty extreme diet, I'm really not dogmatic about it.

My daughter is a 100% lifetime raw vegan. My wife eats mainly cooked vegan, but isn't 100%.

Politically, I am a pacifist . I am also a bit of an anarchist and a bit of a socialist. I'm a big fan of Henry David Thoreau, Jack London, Noam Chomsky, and Howard Zinn among others.

More on Fruitarianism:

I went fruitarian on Dec. 1st, 2009 as an experiment. I understand that 100% fruit diets are controversial, and that many (including Doug Graham) say that they are not sustainable. However, consuming greens in their natural state never appealed to me. I had to blend greens in a smoothie in order to handle them at all. If I observe a health or fitness decline, or develop strong cravings, I will not hesitate to terminate the experiment.

I have a couple other reasons for having an interest in fruitarianism, besides disliking greens. Other advantages of a fruitarian diet: ethics – I am no longer harming plants when I eat my food, environment – fruit trees yield more calories per acre and don’t damage topsoil, and I am not eating the toxic chemicals in the leaves that plants use for protection (“lettuce opium”, etc.).

My daughter & I at the park, and the police:

Posted on June 23, 2010 at 3:53am 22 Comments

I took my 17-month-old daughter Rose to the park yesterday afternoon, as usual. This park is only 2 blocks from our apartment, and the weather was gorgeous, and so we went shirtless & barefoot, also as usual. There are other people who go shirtless at this park sometimes, and also other people who sometimes go barefoot. The unusual thing was that we were paid a visit by the police at the park. We were just sitting in the grass, and two officers got out of their cars, and walked up to us.… Continue

hi jeff,

ever since you've been eating purely fruits, do you ever get cravings for anything salty or savory? if you do, do you just ignore the craving?

hi jeff,

thanks for stopping by and answering my questions. :) one more, if you don't mind... :) you mentioned that when you went to china, you had some stir-fried veggies and noodles. how did that go with your digestion? any problems? and suppose today, you ate those food again, how do you think your body will react to them? just curious, since i live here in china and often get tempted by local foods. i usually resist, but don't know how my body would react to them. i've been lfrv for 4 years... very consistent in the past year.

hi jeff,

i just read your interview with mango. i'm curious to know how do you handle yourself when you eat out with your wife? i'm sure she loves chinese restaurants? do you go with her? or do you guys just eat it all the time? do you ever get tempted by her cooking?

also, when you visited china, did you stay all fruit?

Hi Jeff

You are an inspiration to me, having eaten 100% fruit for so long now.

I see that you haven't used toothpaste, deo, shampoo or soap in a while - I find this very interesting, I have been considering something similar myself. Can you give me an idea what effects this has had on you, and what alternatives you use?

Hey Jeff,

I wanted to ask you a few questions about dates! :) Although I have tried the less sweet deglet noor dates, I found them to be unappetizing, and much prefer the sweeter medjool dates, although I cannot eat too many of them in one sitting yet--working on that, however. The problem is that it is difficult for me to get enough calories without dates, especially when they are out of season...and soaked dried dates are not nearly as tasty. Can you suggest anywhere to order fresh dates out of season, or perhaps an alternative to dates? Thanks so much! :)

Hi Jeff,
I'm not participating much here but I read some of the threads from time to time and read recently that you had decided to go all fruit last December. How is it going?
Best wishes,
Nora
