I have been too busy and not getting enough sleep and when tired I tend not to eat so good, it's a steamroll effect really. As a result I have had a UTI (self diagnosed) for one week and during that…Continue

Celebrated 47 years on this earth last week and thought it would be nice to come up with this list to reinforce my commitment to hcrv. I also like the 'fruit-based vegan' term, it just came out of my mouth the other day at the grocery store when someone asked me (again) about all the bananas. I thought coming up with 47 reasons would be a challenge but once I sat down to do it, it took less than 10 minutes! They're not in any specific order, I just wrote them as I thought of…

Got busy in the dirt yesterday and planted greens and carrots in my cold frames - who cares if it's snowing!! Spring is such a great time for renewal and happiness. It's been a very difficult and dark winter for me personally. I was certainly able to stay vegan, that's no longer a question, and fitness is a very part of my being now, but I've let the excess nuts and fatty chips numb myself into non feeling because things were just so hard. But things are better each day, I've gone…

I haven't been coming to these forums very often lately but it's just so nice to know that I can come here and my wild ways seem utterly normal. There's so many healthy, centered people here offering good advice, relevant news and inspiring messages and videos. It's my favorite place on the internet.

Well, it was Dec. 12, 2010 when I started getting 2500 cals or more from fruit each day. I am occasionally eating cooked foods but feel like I have finally re-programmed my body to say no to the foods that still surround me. The issues I still need to work on are insuring success by getting enough sleep, stress management and not overeating nuts when I am hungry/undercarbed. I am posting a before and a during photo and look forward to next year's after photo!

Lukas Ircha said… There you go, that sounds like a nice idea. Sister in Florida, 2 months down south would be definitely health beneficial and you could even drive down there for just a few hundred dollars, that would save you five flights.
Most likely once you settle down your whole family wold be happier and you could spend more time outdoors together. The food would be more local as Florida grows a huge amount of fruits for its size relative to other states. If I was a US citizen I would choose southern California coast or southern Florida to live. Remember your health is your Wealth, everyone has only one health, and like Doug says, there is no time out. Health is build or lost linearly gradually with each moment and all the various lifestyle choices. Living more than 50 deg. latitude away from the solar equator is definitely unhealthy for our species.

Lukas Ircha said… Mary - That is nice to hear you are raising your own family and staying close to your extended family. It is not too incredibly challenging to skip a couple months. In Mexico you can rent a house for 200 - 400 dollars a month and your whole family can stay there and flights to Puerto Vallarta are normally 600 to 700 bucks, so it can be done with even just $6000 to $8000 a family of 4 can have a good time. Just have to rent outside tourist traps. Food is cheap 10 to 15 bucks a day per person.

Pumpkin X said… It's a pleasure Mary! Each one teach one as they say. And your teaching a whoole family! Thats awesome. Children are our future so automatically societies responsibility. So maybe collectively we are responsible for the neglect and mistreatment of children everywhere, that includes health/ exposure to misleading information in the media, i believe. Mothers are todays heros. I look forward to hearing more from you. X
Pumpkin X said… Hey Mary! Thank you for connecting =) "Children are the seeds! The stronger the root the stronger the treee!!" thank you for being an admirable mother, for your health ethic. Im 21, its inspiring for all women of all ages to see this. Look forward to hearing from you. X
David Costa said… For a long time I peddled with just Vibram Five Fingers shoes on. They let my toes be comfortable, but the positioning of my foot was not that great, I would occasionally feel some discomfort in my injured knee. I switched to clipless pedals and shoes. I went with the Shimano SPD mountain bike system. Alot of people including me prefer it for all uses. I bought http://www.amazon.com/Shimano-PD-M520L-Sport-Pedals-Cleats/dp/B000WYAENC and http://www.amazon.com/Serfas-Saddleback-Mountain-Black-10-10-5/dp/B004CLYKAY/ref=sr_1_1?s=shoes&ie=UTF8&qid=1346787711&sr=1-1&keywords=serfas+saddleback
works good.
David Costa said… Hi Mary
We talked about my knee having problems from running and whether or not cycling would help it, I've been cycling a ton over the last 48 days, about 820 miles, and the knee feels stronger now. I'm starting running again.

Esra said… It's inevitable to make mistakes, but what's important is that we take more steps forward than back! The parenting/veganism thing with kids has been something that's on my mind lately, I'm not at all planning a family (in fact I don't even know if I ever will have one!), but I just find it amazing how people like you can raise kids to be mindful of their eating habits in the crazy world we live in, *especially* with a partner that doesn't pay attention to their food as much as you. Your kids are very lucky Mary :)!
P.S. I love my fruit shelf too! It took me a year to figure out how to store my fruit properly lol.
