Figgie said… Hi Mark, welcome aboard! I actually live about 45 min from Portland, out in the county, which is where I prefer to be most of the time.
actually i work at a gourmet (high fat) raw food restaurant in Portland. I don't prefer this style raw food, but thats what they pay me to make, you know? Anyway, the plus is that I get to by wholesale cases of fruit from our distributor. I could get in trouble if my boss ound out I got stuff for other people, but I could probably get by a case or 2 a month in addition to what I usually do, without her knowledge. The issue with the wholesalers in Portland is that most of then dont do "will calls" this is industry speak for being able to just go there and pick out some fruit at the warehouse without a credit account. If you have good credit and a car and are willing to trek out to the outer city limits to get cases off fruit, you can create an account with one of the wholesalers, either Organically Grown Company or Charlies Produce (for organic) and then pick up there. If you want delivery, you will actually need a business address with the proper zoning to do that. If you know any restaurant owners that would be willing to do your ordering for you, that would work too. Lastly, my advice is that New Season's market gives the best wholesale discount o cases in the city. They do 25% off, i believe, which ends up being only a 10% mark up on what they pay. Sometimes, because they buy from the wholesalers at such a high volume, you end up paying at new seasons for wholesale the same as you would pay for wholesale directly, cause you are only buying a few cases. Sorry to go on and on, but the quest for cheap produce has been a search of mine for awhile. Welcome to PDX!
Let me know if I can help you with anything else! I know I am looking forward to the spring and the beginning of cheap abundant you pick fruit!
