Where'd ya go, China Study?

Started this discussion. Last reply by Sunshine Feb 8, 2012. 6 Replies

I recently went to a library on campus to pick up The China Study. This was one location that had the book out of two. I found this fairly interesting, since we have 40+ libraries. When I looked…Continue

The ethics of pastured eggs.

I've been thinking about pastured laying hens lately and have been wondering about the ethics involved. They get to putz around in the grass, doing what chickens do, and then get a place to keep them…Continue

Leeching calcium from bones and teeth.

Started this discussion. Last reply by Chuckster Nov 8, 2011. 4 Replies

I am interested in all the claims that if you don't eat more calcium than phosphorus, minerals will be leeched from your bones and teeth. Sure it makes sense, but if it were true, most of the…Continue

Eric Anderson replied to Luna Leaf's discussion Binaural beats ... does anyone use them?
"Binaural beats are heard more like a sinusoidal wave, while isochronics are square waves. The bigger the electrical imprint left on the brain, the more entrainment that's supposed to take place. This is the theory, and it may work for some, but…"

Eric Anderson replied to Luna Leaf's discussion Binaural beats ... does anyone use them?
"Ah, brevity is a virtue, so I understand not wanting to go on for too long. I assumed that you were mostly criticizing the market that makes such bold and unsupported statements (which I entirely agree with), but I didn't want the effect to be…"

Eric Anderson replied to Luna Leaf's discussion Binaural beats ... does anyone use them?
"Hey, I've got to say, you aren't quite understanding binaural beats. One tone is played into the right ear, and another in the left. Let's say these two frequencies are 390Hz and 398Hz. What a binaural beat is, is the pulsing sound…"

Eric Anderson replied to Luna Leaf's discussion Binaural beats ... does anyone use them?
"I used them for several weeks a couple years ago when I first decided to try out meditation. Only positive effects to report. I never did as well with isochronic tones, but binaurals worked quite well for me, which I think is because the sound was…"

"To my knowledge, quinoa is actually a seed, not a true grain. That said, I don't believe it is specifically mentioned in 80-10-10, but it is probably discouraged.  If you're entertaining guests, I don't know if I'd worry…"

Eric Anderson replied to Perry Fullerton's discussion Fuhrman Needs More Fruit!
"Where is the contradiction? He says the WHO recommends these protein figures, not himself.  Saying that one only needs a minimum amount x of y does not imply that one should consume only x of y. I think that is where you're getting…"

I have been interested in improving my own health and athletic performance for a couple years now. About a year ago, I found out about 80-10-10 and it has struck a chord with me ever since. I was a vegetarian for about 1.5 years prior to my natural (and mostly unintended) transition to vegan fare. I try to eat low fat and low protein, but some days are better than others. Same with fruit, some days I'll get in over a thousand fruit calories, and others only several hundred. I typically eat greens every day, but only about half a pound on a good day. Ideally, I'd like to increase my fruit intake, and definitely take in more greens as soon as possible (about a pound a day, or at least a head a day for a good approximation). I am a student at UW-Madison, so both my budget and access to quality fruit are limited. I want to join 30bad, because I have found good info on it before, and now, with renewed vigor, wish to take on 80-10-10 in college, or at least do what I can. I have done some calculations and feel confident that I can do 80-10-10 on roughly the same amount of money that I spend on food now. These calculations, however, assume approximately 2250-2600 calories a day, which I know is not recommended here. Plus, my staple foods would be bananas, dates, and romaine, with about $3 left per day to spend on another type of fruit; which concerns me as far as variety goes. Any tips I can get would be very helpful. I requested "The 80-10-10 Diet" through UW's inter-library loan system, but may not get it for a few weeks yet; and I know that would be a great source of info.
