Over the past year or two I have been finding ways to improve my quality of life and health

I want to do Ultra-marathons and Triathlons someday. I'm addicted to getting my blood moving from aerobic exercise.

I'm High Carb Raw Vegan now, I eat bananas and dates as my staple diet and eat these other things as I feel the need to consume them, watermelon, oranges, cherries, peaches, nectarines, grapes, romaine lettuce, tomatoes, red bell peppers, cucumbers, celery, avocados.

I sold my car, started cycling walking or running everywhere for myself and the environment. I threw away my TV, I use my computer now when I'm bored, learn things on the internet instead.

Around Dec 2011 I switched to the barefoot lifestyle, since then I feel more aware of where I am. With shoes it seemed like only my eyes, ears and nose were the only things that could tell me where I was, I would have to concentrate and see "O, I'm in the store" or "O, I'm in the woods". With no shoes I feel more in touch with my surroundings. I feel more balanced. It's more efficient for running, I can run further now. I feel better blood flow in my feet so they stay warmer. Injuries are exaggerated, nothing bad has happened. I go for runs around a pond that has some nice trails on it, really rough trails, covered with rocks, roots, pine needles, sometimes I sprint on this stuff. I don't have all this dead skin that wants to soften up and come off when it gets saturated with water from wearing socks all the time. I can move the toes more, the toes seem to be straightening out.

I live in Hawaii now, way better than Massachusetts was.

811 helps you survive attacks from SUV's going 40MPH

Posted on January 21, 2013 at 12:00pm 8 Comments

Was riding my bicycle 10 days ago, got hit directly from behind by an SUV that was going 40MPH driven by an old nearly blind man, I was thrown off the bike and rolled over the top of the vehicle and landed behind it, got 3 fractured vertebrae, concussion, sore ribs and shoulder and some bloody scrapes. Was carried 50…

My first dumpster dive haul

Went to the Trader Joes dumpster at 2:00 am, hopped the fence, pulled out some bags, some had the celery and romaine in them, and there was a box full of limes. Not a great score, but something.

Point out flaws in my thoughts

Posted on December 3, 2012 at 4:46pm 3 Comments

We have gotten ourselves into a scary place, a place where we can manipulate objects and get all kinds of things from the environment and come up with reasons for why their "healthy". No one is qualified to make that call, it's just experimentation, "healthy" is a marketing term. That's why I stick to what has been around for the longest times when it comes to my diet, anything newly messed with (in the time since we started using tools) by humans should be taken in very small quantities.

Sand embedded in lens of my eye

Posted on September 20, 2012 at 2:49am 8 Comments

Was riding my bike fast and a strong gust of wind blew what I think is a small piece of sand into the lens, it's not in the center so it's not affecting my vision.

I went to sleep last night, it happened almost 24 hrs ago, was hoping it would come out.

Will it come out given time?

Hi David :)

So I see you're in hawaii...and I have been thinking of going there, to backpack/explore/wwoof/work, whatever basically. I have never been there though, and am curious about what it's like for that kind of life. I'm on a really tight budget so I can't afford to be paying rent and all that unless I find a job there. What advice would you have for my plan?? Plus I'd really really love to meet some nice people down there. I need some more 811 friends man...

thanks so much

Alright, perfect! So what brings you to Hilo exactly? I know that it's one of the least touristy places of the Islands, so you'll really get a "real" Hawaii feel. I'm kind of just wanting to know what the locals are like, fresh produce that is available, and the water life (ex: is there a nearby beach, etc.). But of course, I'd just be interested in hearing your thoughts overall from your adventure :)

Hey David! I just joined the Hawaii Group, and I noticed that you mentioned you'll be flying to Hilo, Hawaii soon. I was actually wondering if you might be able to tell me how your experience was there, because I've been accepted into the college their, and since there's no way for me to visit, it's hard to get a feel of it. I would just be interested in knowing what you think of Hilo in particular!

Thanks in advance! :) Hope you enjoy your trip!

Bananas and dates. Wow. I eat a lot of fruit but more veggies than fruit. I was always told that all the good stuff (nutrients) is in the dark greens and multi colored raw veggies.

Just added Grahams's book to my que at the library. I have done a lot of research and have been leaning towards going vegan and running minimalist the past few years. I finally got the inspiration to dive in after reading the book Born to Run. It's not always easy. I was raised on the SAD and I'm surrounded by friends and loved ones who eat the SAD. I've been feeling so alone. My hubby has been very supportive but I still feel the need to fix regular SAD meals for my family. I can't expect them to embrace it just because I do. Not to mention, it's extremely expensive buying all that produce! I guess I'm just taking it in stages for now...

Forgot to ask... what is 811?

At 2:33am on February 19, 2013, Toni Hartman said…

That's horrible, David. Broken vertebrae sounds awfully serious! You should read that book (The Long Run). He was a fire fighter in NYC who got hit by a bus. He shouldn't have survived. His doctors believe he survived mainly because he was such a strong athlete and his body was conditioned to endure so much. It's very inspirational. I'm so glad that you've chosen a more healthy lifestyle. What made you think that you needed to change your diet and your running style?
