I started my diet change about a year and a half ago for two reasons. One: I had started noticing my body react to certain things I had always eaten more than it used to and I felt like crap, and didn't want to anymore. Two: I was drastically changing spiritually too, and that research also lead me to this type of diet change.
The first thing I narrowed down that was bothering me was red meat, and upon cutting that out and researching why it was bothering me, I started gradually cutting out other things. I became a vegetarian and started eating more organic foods and less processed. Within literally TWO WEEKS my lifelong struggle with chronic depression had disappeared! This motivated me to keep going! To make a long story short, I eventually became vegan and cut out wheat and soy too. I did everything gradually, never pushed myself, because I did not want to compromise my mental health and go back to being depressed. I always let myself cheat, and that helped a lot because I would FEEL the negative consequences of the bad foods and then eventually just not want to cheat anymore. In the middle somewhere, I did a juice fast for about 10 days because my husband wanted to do it. He is very much more overweight than I am, and he was a big reason I did all this...to support his weight loss. I am home most of the day with my daughter and he works, so I do all the research and food prep and he just does what I tell him :)

As of now (Sept. 2012), I have lost about 50 lbs and so has my husband, however, I have gone back to feeling lethargic, unhappy, my joints ache, and I highly suspect I have hypothyroid. Upon researching hypothyroid, I'm pretty sure I've had it all my life. It got better for a while with the diet change, but now its coming back worse. My body seems to be telling me cooked foods are bad now. I had already done research on that, and tried to eat more raw, and I suspect that made my body ask for more. I have started a raw/fruitarian diet now and it is just beginning to help :)

As I said, I live in Wisconsin, USA. I am both nervous and kind of excited to find out what it will be like to be on raw fruit in winter. I know I am going to have to find other options (maybe mail order?) besides grocery stores, as the produce gets pretty bland during winter and even now, there is hardly any variety, I am already getting sick of it on day 5. We have farmer's markets now that are saving me, but there won't be any in winter. We don't have a Whole Foods supermarket or Trader Joe's...really nothing like that here, just the "organic section" at the store which I'm lucky if its two isles. I started a garden this year, but that will be gone in winter too, so this should get interesting!

Are you Connected?
yes i am
My favourite books/movies/authors/pastimes are....
Food issues aside, I am a mother of one 4 year old girl. I met my husband 8 years ago at work, and he totally changed my life from being a totally "asleep" (sheeple), listening to country music, watching TV, being like everyone else (although I realize now I never accepted it, I just never realized I was allowed to be different)...to listening to independent/underground metal, becoming spiritual, questioning everything, getting rid of mainstream TV, radio, and all that crap, and learning how to live in the now. I have gone from HATING school and learning to being almost obsessed with learning! I love watching documentaries and reading about "alternative" views, especially ideas that most people would think are bull-crap...some ARE bull-crap, and some end up changing my life, like this fruitarian discovery :)

My biggest passion is horses, has been all my life, and I have one 5 year old appaloosa mare that is my inspiration for everything I do. My goal is to live somewhere where I can see her from my window and be with her every day, grow my own food, and become as self-sufficient as possible. :)

I really don't watch movies much anymore, as I said, I am currently more interested in learning than entertainment. My change in music from country to metal has changed my life so much that I can't even put it into words. Its hard to explain how the heaviest, most brutal and harsh music out there opened my mind and made me HAPPY, but it did :) The stuff I prefer had a more spiritual aspect to it, with lots of classical influence, and very technical and complicated. My absolute favorite is the band Nevermore, and their guitarist, Jeff Loomis, who has two solo albums. He has inspired me so much...although he is metal, absolutely nothing about his music makes me feel angry or negative. In fact, when I was still depressed, it was my depression medication.

Really not sure yet as I'm only on day 5 of being on raw/mostly fruit. I have all the hypothyroid symptoms, so I could use help with that. I have read that I should stay away from broccoli, cabbages, etc. because they can interfere with thyroid. I really cannot go to a doctor in my current situation unless absolutely necessary. No regular doctor here will even consider this kind of thing, I have no insurance, my house has been foreclosed on (aka: stolen out of no fault of our own) and we are very broke from fighting it and trying to find a new place to live. This diet is also helping money-wise, but there is just no way I can go to a doctor right now and pay for it, so I am just doing as much research as I can find on every angle of this, so I cover everything. It seems very daunting right now, especially with the added stress of what's going on in my life, but my body was pretty much forcing me to do this. I will probably get the book you recommend too.

P.S. Nice to read about your "awakening"! :D  Thought you might like this quote:

The Healthy Person!

Just want to share some inspiration someone shared with me! :)

I invite you to read it slowly and contemplate its truth deeply.
Enjoy the journey!

Health is the most desirable possession of mankind. It is the most precious, yet, to some, the most elusive of all possessions. Without its presence all other gifts are but as the feeble flickering of tapers compared with the power and glory of the midday sun, which it represents. The possession of health makes life a perpetual joy. Nothing daunts the man and woman possessed of health —nothing overawes, nothing discourages, nothing overpowers. It is the constant source of untold pleasures— pleasures incalculable, and yet seldom appreciated until they are gone. Health means vim, vigor, snap and energy. Health means clarity and strength of mind; purity and beauty of soul. The healthy person is unconscious of discomfort; he rises superior to it— is absolutely the monarch of all he surveys. He dominates life instead of allowing it to dominate him. He is unconscious of the parts of his body or the functions they perform. He is a unit—a being—a man, whole, complete, vigorous, perfect, happy—because healthy. To such a man work is a joy; obstacles but opportunities for endeavor; difficulties but a means of enlarged triumph. He knows no weariness, no languor, no lassitude, no exhaustion, except the healthy weariness and exhaustion, easily recuperated, that comes from pleasurably exerted strength and vigor. He is a radiating center of life —physical, mental, spiritual. To grasp his hand is a pleasure, to gaze into his eyes a joy, to hear his voice is to feel a thrill, and to peer into his mind is to be stimulated to higher achievement. Health plus, all things else being equal, is what makes the champion, the expert, the “Captain,” in any and every line. It supplies the courage, the daring, the boldness, the aggressiveness of life. It is what makes initiative possible, bulldog pertinacity effective, and achievement assured.
