I'm a 15 year old girl who comes from an Arab-hispanic family. Ever since I was a little girl the foods I have consumed have been all over the place. From the Arab side I ate a lot of veggies and various ways to get protein without it coming from animals, various plates being tabbouleh, hummus, falafel, dolma. Being born in Venezuela, trees surrounded me, fruits where always within an arms reach, there where mango trees everywhere and other fruits like starfruits, I even had a tamarind tree in my backyard, and we got lemons and other fruits from friends, blackberries, you name it. I remember as a child my mother used to take to swimming lessons and while I was in the pool she would sit under a mango tree and trow a rock to get many mangoes down.I think it was my favorite fruit, commonly people would get mangoes from trees, peel them, add some salt, vinegar and lemon and adobo(a really nice combination of spices usually used to marinate fish) and sell them on the streets. Sadly even though these fruits where available at all times we stuffed our faces with very traditional dishes such as arepas, empanas and tequenos. These are fried foods, abundant in grease and extremely addicting. After moving from Venezuela fruits became scarce and mangos are not daily treats anymore. I came to this community after watching a lot of videos on the HCRV life style and just reading a lot about this life style. Currently I have been wanting to convince my mom to let me change to this lifestyle but she is not budging and I really want this for me. Right now I weight 137 pounds, I'm 5'3 and only 15, I have been starting to put on weight, my cravings for sugar have gotten really badly, my periods are extremely heavy to the point I had to go to the doctor only to have them give me birth control, my acne is getting really bad, I have no energy, my sleep is scarce I probably get about 5 hours of sleep at night and come home exhausted from school, I'm lazy and unproductive. Since the 7th grade I have been wanting to loose weight and failing miserably because I keep giving me unrealistic diets and nothing is substainable , around 8th grade summer I started cutting my intake to 500 calories a day, viciously counting my calories and I kept failing my diets every week, giving me feelings of hate towards myself for not achieving such unrealistic goals, around the end of that summer I came across pro-ana sites giving me detailed instructions on just how to under eat, and suddenly I realized how bad what I had been doing was and stopped that,my mother had instilled deep morals and always talked about how important my health was since I was little so I immediatly realized how terrible what I was doing was, after that I tried 1200 calories a day, but even then I was hungry and craving sugar. After weeks of trying to start it over and over again I kept failing, then I tried detox diets, cabbage soup diets, lemonade detox you name it. Even now I have not achieved anything, if anything I put on more weight. So I went back to researching veganism, back in 5th grade I read a vegan book which talked about the human anatomy and how the industry made us believe something was healthy when it really wasnt, after that I became excited and told my mother and a lot of family of my new found discoveries and how I wanted to be vegan, they of course shut me down ignoring everything I said and my own aunt being a doctor adviced my mom to make me drink milk, so I forgot about it all about it, then last year I met my first art teacher whom is vegan and he talked about everything freele did to me, so did my counselor which was also a vegan. Not HCRV vegans though, suddenly I gained interest and here I am, 2014 looking for guidance and a way to convince my hispanic mother I want to eat fruit for meals.
