This is Chanee, and yes it's standard practice [in thailand] to take durian before they absize naturally and drop. Thai variteties have been bred for this for along time, it gives them a huge marketing advantage because the durian will last for a week or more before spoiling, as opposed to 12 hours-3 days for natural drops. the best durian i've had was in Hi. at a "special" friends farm. He has some of the oldest trees in Hi., [d-123/d-132/& chanee]. I found that d-123 spoils in 12-24 hours after drop and is best when it just starts to absize and i gently nudge it free w/ a long stick. D-132 will last for up to 5 days and actually split naturally at the base so you can peel open w/ bare hands. Thais use a special stick to tap the fruit and determine when to pick as well as when to eat. Durian alroy mak-mak !!!
