Mango Week

The biggest haul of my fruit eating existence. 376 mangoes! I split the fruit with my bro 60/40 in my favor.

I love ataulfo mangoes so much. 3/1$ is amazing! Over at Whole Foods near where I live, atoulfo mangoes go by the case for 15$.

The weekly adverts that come in the mail is how I find out about the deals. I do put local supermarkets on my contact list, so when I'm in different parts of the city I can call up and see if the nearest places have anything I want.

@Amberoonie. These are the ataulfo variety so the pit isn't very big. I make a vertical cut down each side of the pit to make two halves. You will get better at this as you begin to see the shape of the pit. It's thin and tear-shaped. I usually skin and cut the flesh off of the pit, then I simply run a spoon around the border of each half, and spoon out the flesh. Maybe I'll take a picture of this. The science of getting the most flesh out of each fruit is pretty fascinating to me. Hah.

@Ben: This week you can get 3/$1 @ some HEBs (I'd call ahead), Fiesta on 38th, and El Rancho. Just buy the best 100 from each store. Fiesta also has $0.69/lb papayas. I've got about 15 of them as well. If you don't like the state of the mangoes on the racks, be sure to try and get them to bring more mangoes out from the back and pick the best and biggest mangoes from each case.

How do you cut those?  I'm making quite a mess out of those and the bigger mangoes.  Sometimes I give up and just go in face first... any suggestions?  Beautiful collection there, btw.  Looks yummy.

Yes, those are guavas. They are not ripe.  I buy the biggest ones I can find and wait until they get softer, more yellow, and smell good. This winter was the first time I bought them. They have a lot of protein for a fruit so they were great on days with lots of dates. They also have tons of Vit C, so $2/lb. is a good deal.

are those little yellow roundish things guavas? are they ripe? I see them often at the market, but the ones at the market are always green, never any yellows.

So, when I was picking out the last 120 mangoes yesterday, a woman at the mango rack was buying just about the same amount! She was waiting around for the fruit stocker to come out from the back with a new load of even larger mangoes. I'm glad I waited around because they were twice the size of the ones that were on the rack. She asked me for how many people I was buying the fruit. I was like, "My brother and I eat a lot of fruit...mostly mangoes right now."

Aprecio mucho tus comentarios!
