30 Bananas a Day!

Are these bananas ripe enough?

I just started eating bananas about a month ago. Haven't had one since I was little (about 3-4 years old). I'm still struggling to know how the bananas should look like when they are ripe enough. They still have a little green colour to them, on the ends.

It may sound ridicolous.. but usually I just smell them :D When they have that specific sweet aroma they are ready to be eaten. Oh and the tip tells it all for me. When it is a bit thinned and darker it's okay to eat :D Brown spots aren't always the indicator of ripenes, sometimes you can have a ripe banana without spots, or non ripe banana with spots.

i like the way they look even with the greenish parts.  probably not perfect however i would surely eat them.  good picture. interesting post!

Yes Totally! You can put the bag in a sunny place to warm them up and they will ripen a lot faster.

I say they're unripe because in my experience... when they have greens tops and ends.. they're still starchy.

"Will they ripen faster in a warmer environment?" Yes, they will. But I would not expose them to direct sunlight in summer, because then they get cooked (black peel). ;)

Thank you for all the replies :) I'm wondering though.. What are the best ripening conditions for bananas? I keep them in the paper box that they came in, in my basement. They don't get any direct sunlight. My basement is pretty cool though. Will they ripen faster in a warmer environment?

I've actually had bananas that were all yellow with some brown spots but were hard-ish to peel and were more starchy than sweet, so not quite ready. I'd eat them over McDonald's for sure! But not ideal. I keep over ripe bananas that I cannot eat before they go too smushy, peeled and frozen and use them in smoothies, for those times when I am waiting on my latest haul to get ripe all the way. I know frozen is not the best, but it helps me bridge the gap.
