Comment by Greg Gallup on March 8, 2012 at 8:55am I ended up going to 99 Ranch because that was the only place I knew of. So far everything I've had has been good! I'll check out SF Market next time I'm down there- I was close by there too. Thanks!
Comment by meganthevegan on March 7, 2012 at 7:36pm Greg, best place to get Durian in Sac, in my opinion and experience, is the SF Market at Florin and 65th in South Sac. Every durian I've had there has been consistently good...some not as sweet as others, but none that have been bad :)
Comment by Greg Gallup on March 1, 2012 at 5:27am Best place to get Durian in Sac?
I think I'll hit that NorCal place when I'm down there too this weekend :)
Comment by FarmerChlo on February 22, 2012 at 10:08am Woohoo, just ordered a case of mangos ($9!!) dates ($57!!) and bananers (<$27!!) Thanks so much for the tip Gary.
Comment by Gary Frates on February 16, 2012 at 5:23pm Dates are org. and are from Jewell Date. Don't remember about the bananas. Call them and they will tell you in an instant. 916-373-0830. Yes, this is a much better deal on dates and not too far away from me as I live in West Sac.
Comment by FarmerChlo on February 16, 2012 at 4:04pm Wow wow wow that is insanely cheap, awesome!! Are the bananas Dole? (I have a personal loathesome relationship with them and their multinational counterparts--they are the Monsanto of the fruit world if you will...http://smallfarmersbigchange.coop/2009/05/27/unpeeling-chiquita-and...). Can you tell me where the dates are from as well? I get them for 7/lb from the farmer's market in Sac and 6/lb for a case from my local healthfood store in Auburn (both are organic and from southern CA), but $57 for a case is almost half of what I pay so that would be a major improvement for me as I'm on a tight budget as well! Thanks for the info Gary :o)
Comment by Gary Frates on February 16, 2012 at 8:30am My friend who buys more than I do at NorCal said to call first and make and order to make sure of availability and price. Tell them you are an individual and want to put your order on "the house acct." because that's how they will do it anyway and it clears up confusion since most of their calls are from businesses, etc. with their own accts. Then he told me to bring the exact change in cash to pay them in the lobby. Depending on how much you buy, they will either bring it to you there or you go to the pick up door to get it. Org. bananas $28/40lb. case (May 2011) recently I think I got them cheaper, Medjool 15# box $57.
Comment by tcat on February 16, 2012 at 7:59am Thanks for your help. I'm just starting out and my boyfriend has decided he wants to do it too so we're going to be buying a lot of fruit. How much are the bananas at the Sac Co-op? I am a member of the Davis Co-op and they are over $1/lb for organic bananas which is too expensive for us since we both work part time only. I have been getting them from Safeway ($0.74/lb for organic) or Trader Joes ($0.29 each for organic) but I want to find someplace less expensive.
Does the NorCal wholesaler have a problem selling to individuals? Do you just show up with some cash and get what you want or do you have to call them and arrange something ahead of time? Thanks
Comment by FarmerChlo on February 15, 2012 at 4:12pm *Be sure to check out farmer's markets in your area if downtown Sac is far from you.
Comment by FarmerChlo on February 15, 2012 at 4:09pm Hey tcat, you should go to the farmer's market at W and 8th on Sundays (8am-noon year round), it's ridiculously inexpensive and your dollars go directly to the farmer that's feeding ya! Fresh, organic, dates, lettuces, apples, mandarins, kiwis all in season right now and way cheaper than buying bulk from any store :o). I get my bananas from the Sac Natural Foods Co-op by the case and as a member you get 15% off of all case orders--February is 5% off produce month too so their 20% off right now. Gary I've never heard of NorCal I'll have to check them out, I'm a mango fiend!
