A group for discussing, explaining and promoting vegan pet food.
For a vegan world it is absolutely imperative to transition our companion animals to a cruelty free diet.
Why should a cow grow up suffering and dying miserably for the sake of a companion animal?
Why should the oceans be trawled and killed for fluffy?
There can be no justification for this behavior, the consequences are real and the suffering is real.
If you scroll to the bottom of this page, or click the below links, you will find dedicated pages to non cats and dogs, such as pigs, parrots, rats, sheep and so on. Enjoy.

Overview on Vegan Cats
The most prominent issue regarding vegan cats is that of taurine. Taurine is an amino acid essential to all beings. Herbivores and omnivores can produce it within their bodies but obligate carnivores such as cats cannot. Taurine is found in vegetable matter but not in sufficiently high enough qualities to sustain an obligate carnivore such as the domestic cat.
However taurine has been produced synthetically since the 1930s (involving no use of animal products) for commercial use. BOTH mainstream and vegan cat food use this taurine. It is added to mainstream cat food because the meat used is of such poor quality and so heavily processed that that any real taurine is processed out.
Catfood myths:
Meat catfood is natural:
Commercial cat food is the product of slaughterhouse waste and chemical concoctions.
The meat cats eat is natural:
Imagine that your cat has swam several thousand miles out to see. Then it dives several miles underneath the surface. After this incredulous feat, the cat then wrestles with an animal that is 800 pounds, and more likely to eat IT. Tuna fish is considered a cat staple, but how can a cat eating it be possibly natural?
Imagine, your cat tracking down a cow and killing it, and devouring it.
Firstly, one cannot assume a domesticated cow has the same value of nutrition of wild prey.
Cows eat processed grains and pumped full of antibiotics and hormones.
Secondly, it's simply impractical to think a domestic cat can handle taking down this huge prey. Wild cats, whom come from the desert, before they were domesticated, ate mostly insects.
If an animal eats it, that means it's supposed to eat it:
Commercial "pet food" is so processed these days with additives and addicting chemicals, that it can fool their natural senses. Put cat food in front of any animal, and they will eat it. Rabbits will eat cat food.
Good reading.
Food Pets Die for
Learn about commercial pet food. More than just your average spent cow dies for it.
Obligate Carnivore
For those who are considering switching over any animal to veganism.
Below are two recommended ways of feeding your cat(s) a vegan diet. Both ensure complete nutrition. Most sellers of vegan pet food recommend gradual progression from a meat to vegan diet, this usually involves gradually mixing in the vegan food with the regular until it becomes completely vegan.
VEGECAT
Vegecat is a vegan cat food supplement around since 1986 and just 6ml (just over one teaspoon) a day is enough to keep a 10lb (4.5kg) cat healthy according AAFCO (Association of American Feed Control Officials). Effectively this formula is used mixed with vegan foods suitable for cats such as oats, seitan, tofu. A comprehensive list of recipes comes with every pot of Vegecat. Available fromVegePet.

AMI CAT
Ami Cat is the most popular pre-packaged vegan cat food to date. It contains 1.5% taurine which is 0.5% more than legally required in dry cat food.
CANADA: Karmavore
U.S.A.: VeganCats
U.K. and EUROPE: VeggiePets
(All suppliers also carry a number of vegan dog foods.)

Overview on Vegan Dogs
Dogs are technically omnivorous and most do not require the amino acid taurine. Many dogs in Mexico and India are vegan simply due to the lack of meat available. Usually specialist food is not required and they do well on regular human vegan food. This video gives a general oversight covering cases where some dogs may require taurine.
Sandy Anderson, creator of Veganpet, explains her product. (The interview is basically about dog food but the company carries both cat and dog foods.)
These products are available in both Australia and New Zealand.

Comment by Lydia on June 13, 2013 at 2:05 Ta, for that! I will have a play on cronometer and make up a treat for her :)
Comment by ednshell on June 13, 2013 at 2:00 Yeah that should work just fine to start her off at your house. :) Dogs need at least 10% protein and I think 15$% fat but can eat more than that. The rest being carbs. I can't find the pdf I went by that showed these numbers based upon university studies. But I know commercial dog foods must have 9% protein. So you could make your own recipe based on these numbers.
Comment by Lydia on June 13, 2013 at 1:42 Good point, Ednshell! She has happily been on a homemade cooked vegan diet before, but lately has been having mostly fresh bananas, nectarines, okra, carrots, and greens. I know my mother-in-law will not feed my dog fruit and veg, so that's why I thought I could go back to baking a big batch of veg food. I've got enough of the veggie dog supplement (still well within date and stored in cool dry cupboard) left to make some. I just want to make sure I get the right nutrients in with it being cooked food. When I say soon...it is a few weeks away, so if I start the change now it might be okay? What do you think?
Comment by ednshell on June 13, 2013 at 1:13 If you change her diet won't you run the risk of her having accidents while in your Mom's care? What does she eat now? Our dog eats about 14 bananas a day and a handful of almonds or ground flax seeds daily with lettuce and other fruits added weekly. If you are going to change her diet, perhaps buying commercial vegan dog food would be easiest and may even convince your mother-in-law to start her dog on it. People seem to like the packaging, it gives it some credibility to what you are doing somehow, lol. :)
Comment by Lydia on June 12, 2013 at 19:24 Hello vegan dog owners! I'm going on holiday soon and my mother-in-law is taking care of our little veggie dog. She feeds her dog on nasty tinned meat and dry food, so I thought I would prepare a big batch of cooked vegan food to make it easy for her to look after my dog. Unfortunately, I've lost my recipes from James Peden, as we have been mostly raw lately. Does anyone have any good recipes without gluten as both me and doggie are gluten intolerant? Or does anyone know where I can find a copy of James Peden's recipes online? Thanks in advance!
