Comment by Don Bennett on Tuesday Michaela, most docs do the correct "D" test (25-hydroxy-vitamin-D), but a small percentage do the wrong test. I go into this in my article "Vitamin D and Cancer". D drops are what I take during my "vitamin D winter". The reasons I take nutritional adjuncts to my diet are outlined in one of my videos. You can get more info in this interview.
Comment by Michaela on Tuesday Im going to get my levels checked, I don't know if my doctor will do the right test though. is the 25(OH)D test the one MD's do? also are Ddrops good? these are the ones I want to take since I cant really swallow pills and they seem good. also Don, why do you take a multivitamin?
Comment by Don Bennett on Sunday Sun, I don't know about not relying on posts here. Some are from people who've been researching vitamin D for 30 years - like myself - and have acquired a lot of truth about the issue. Medical papers are not necessarily the last word on a health subject... they're the last word on medical subjects. And 20,000 units a day via a supplement may be on the high side for most people, but the first recommendation, given before a recommendation on dosage, should be to do a 25(OH)D test to see where you are currently. Only then can you recommend an amount to supplement with. Like many supplements, it's an individual thing; as there is a difference between a therapeutic dose and a maintenance dose.
Daniela, mushrooms can supply you with D2, which is not that effective at raising your 25(OH)D level. I've had many clients who were not able to raise their 25(OH)D level in any meaningful way with D2. A lamp array such as this one is a better idea during your "vitamin D winter". But since this one is small, I'd get three (optimally), or two at least. If looking into another array, make sure it makes D in your skin, and doesn't just tan you; most just tan you.
Isn't it amazing at how much we need to know about vitamin D, when a v-e-r-y long time ago, when we all lived in our biological "eco-niche", we didn't need to know anything about it.
Sundried mushrooms from wild collection help to get more vitamin d, especially Chanterelle and Porcini.
Comment by sun on May 13, 2013 at 7:16am I suggest minimum of 20,000 IU a day It is the most inexpensive supplement there is.read the books and medical papers dont rely on little posts here.
Comment by sun on May 13, 2013 at 7:15am Join the vitamin D council to get updates frequenlty on all the research take it internally if you dant get quite alot of sunlight a day D is as critical if not more so thaty B12. period. try reading 10 books about it then check in on the issue. the issues around D deficiency is serious on every front.

Comment by Michaela on May 11, 2013 at 11:21pm whats the best way to get vitamin D in the winter?? tanning bed? supplement? artificial lights? mushrooms? and if you live in a cold climate should you have a vitD supplement, whatever it is, for just the winter and rely on the sun during the warm months or just take it all the time?
