30 Bananas a Day!

Hello, just finding this site now and so excited to talk/meet other san diegans doing 80-10-10. My family and I have been raw vegan for a while, and just recently read the 80-10-10 book. We are on board, and excited, but have no idea where to get all the fruit needed for a family of 4. Where do you guys buy your stuff in bulk. We go to the Hillcrest farmers market every sunday and get most of our stuff there, but we're looking to get fruit (esp bananas and dates) in bulk. Any suggestions/tips/thoughts would be much appreciated. Where do you guys live in SD? We live in Del Cerro (across the freeway from SDSU). Do you ever have get togethers? Would love to be around more people that can help inspire us- most of our friends think we're nuts! Anyways, looking forward to getting to know you all.

Hey Lauren! Welcome!

You have quite a story – bravo to your family for taking such a big bold move for your husband's (and everyone's) health and well-being!

I am about 5 minutes away from you! and there are several great people nearby!

We started a fruit and veggie nonprofit to increase access, affordability, and convenience of great organically-grown fruit and veggies in San Diego. PM me and i'll send you the info. It's sorta like a coop in that we have a lot of people buying together, so we can buy directly from farms, get great prices, and still pay the farmers far more than they would be paid by a wholesaler.

Bananas: through the nonprofit we buy Organics Unlimited bananas which are far better than Dole or Chiquita. They are available at OB People's Co-Op or Jimbo's, or I can get you what you need because we buy them weekly anyway.

Dates: We can get 7hotdates minus the shipping fees through the nonprofit.

Other fruit: Hillcrest FM is good but rather pricey. We get a lot of the same fruit for a lot less.

Get togethers: we've done pretty well! What days/times are best for you?

Hi Lauren and Family,

It would be fun to get together with 811 people such as yourselves.  I buy my dates at http://www.medjooldates.com/Organic_Halawi_Dates.asp

they seem to have the best prices of any place I've seen so far. I buy bananas at

Trader Joe's locally.  At 19 cents a banana, that's about around 35 or 40 cents a pound, less than

I see in the grocery store. I live about a mile west of you guys in Allied Gardens. Have you checked out Windmill Farms yet?

I just heard that if you buy a case of bananas at Trader Joe's, you can get a 10% discount.
