Comment by Jessica Prado on Saturday Ah, this is awesome!! Thank you so much!!!!!
Comment by Paul J Butler II on Saturday Jessica! Here are some of the best farmers markets:
Hillcrest Sundays : Farmer Steve is good for buying bulk organic. Barry Koral for tropical & more locally grown organics
La Jolla Sundays : great date grower here & dozens of produce vendors
Little Italy Saturdays
Poway (old town poway) Saturdays : Farmer Steve also at this market. I buy bulk citrus from him.
restaurants there is a great macrobiotic place called Casa de Luz if you're into cooked food. Top Organic grocery stores are Jimbo's (4/5 locations) and Peoples food coop in Ocean Beach.
Comment by Jessica Prado on Saturday Hey Guys! I am moving to SD in about a month and I'd love to know where the best farmers markets and vegan restaurants are.. Help a sista out!!! Thanks!!! :):)
Comment by Hannah Day on February 27, 2013 at 2:36pm Oh my gosh I forgot loquat season!!!! I was abroad last spring so i missed it, and the spring before that was my first one hcrv. I will have to find a new loquat picking buddy cause my old one (who had the extending fruit catcher) moved away this year! Thank you for reminding me!! They do have a slightly mango-y flavor...
Comment by Paul J Butler II on February 27, 2013 at 1:18pm Thank You. Mexican markets in any town should have lots of papaya. Thankfully I totally enjoy oranges so am not sick of them! My body would appreciate something different to come up soon though in abundance. Good news is that LOQUAT season is just around the corner (mid march-may) and those trees are scattered all over town (and in my backyard). I think Loquats have a tropical like flavor sort of mangoey. Currently I mix in seasonal local and stored fruits like pears, kiwi (in search of sweet and not tart ones), apples, dates, cherimoya, guavas. Hope this helps. And if anyone finds about good mango cases I would love to know :) let me know what else you discover. Cheers.
Comment by Hannah Day on February 26, 2013 at 3:06pm thank you for the reply Paul! I love papayas, especially moldy ones :) it's a bit north of me, but if I get the chance, I will check it out.
Comment by Paul J Butler II on February 26, 2013 at 5:55am Hannah,
I scored some great tasting conventional papayas at a mexican market "Jaycees Market" in golden hill 92102 for $0.50/lb. They are especially good when theres a bit of mold forming on the skin or just before that. Their deals change all the time and its best to check out a few different markets. A similar score was a nearby mexi market I found super spotted bananas .33 cents a pound. As far as organic tropical fruits, I haven't a great method aside from bananas at my grocer, Jimbo's, or buy them bulk from anyone who carries Organics Unlimited produce.
Comment by Hannah Day on February 25, 2013 at 1:50pm Hey san diego fruities! i have been getting some major tropical fruit cravings lately, starting to get burnt out on the winter local fare :(
Do any of you have wholesalers, farmers, mexican/asian markets, or other favorite places to get deals on mangoes, melons, papayas, etc?
Thanks for your help!
