Hey! Wanted to share my story here:
I wanted to dive for so long and tried out looking in dumpsters once, but got scared of being caught, not because I would get arrested, but because I would be judged, quit and went home.
Years later, I find myself in a sticky financial situation, having to choose between doing adequate work in school and working 40+ huors a week. I chose school. I was finding myself with less and less money in my back account and having to deal with not knowing when I will be able to buy food again. Not kowing how long I would have to make my food last. I was under-eating, getting tired and my schoolwork, as well as my emotional clarity was suffering.
I found a Dumpster Diving group on 30bad and joined, remembering all of the times I had wanted to go. This seamed the answer to my food problems. I watched Dive! and felt so empowered, enraged, and excited about diving and eatingfor free what would otherwise be polluting the Earth I loved and wanted to save.
I went on my first dive and found some organic, vegan beauty products, which I didn't really use, but decided I needed to give away to friends for the sake that all of the work and raw material that went into making that product, not to mention all of the harm those plastic bottles would do to he Earth and all of it's creatures if they were buried. I took them, went home hungry and posted asking for help from fellow divers on where to find the food I desperately needed.
Holistic Health Detective helped me with a few links for spots to check out around Chicago, as well as connecting me with he friend. The next day I hit up about 5 stores, one of which I found an abundance of fruit and veg in crates, waiting to be smashed up by a compactor and the other I made a friend who worked in the store that would help me get the fruit and veg before they smashed it up in their compactor.
Less than a week later, I am eating liek a Queen and not paying for any of it. The best part is that I am able to eat to my heart's content in free fruit and at the same time, help make less trash for the Earth to deal with.
However, there is so much more to do. I am eating as much as I can and there is still so much more food being wasted. I am currently finding ways to transport all of the extra food I find to shelters and food pantries.
But there is so much more to do! I highly recommend opening up your eyes to the gross disservice first-world food comapnies are doing for all of us. We have to live with the conscequences of our actions or inaction. If you don't want to see innocent, good people go hungry, if you don't want to see the world becomed over-run with trash, if you don't want to support a flawed capitalist system, then you want to dive or at least get out there and help out at a local food pantry or soup kitchen
