Anybody still alive in this group?
I'll most likely be moving back to Cincinnasty round March/April.  Might even need a housemate.  Anyone around?

Anyone from around the Lima area (or anywhere on 75 between Dayton and Toledo)?

Mike, where did you get those bananas and lettuce ?
Comment by VeggiMike on March 3, 2011 at 4:03am

Sure- 50 bananas ($16/case of 100) = $8

A head of organic lettuce ($1.50/head) = $1.50

yep., thats about it... :)

Grapes at $1/lb and citrus at $.50/lb interspersed for good measure.

Oh, and all 811ers are welcome to crash at my place for the night, plenty of room, just bring a sleeping bag and pillow.

Ohio folk, I'm hosting a LFRV potluck this Saturday (in Southern Indiana) and there's still room for a few more attendees! If you are interested in coming, it's not to late to make up your mind! More info about the event here: EVENT INFO

I believe both Jack Storie and Olivia Ladinig from Ohio are attending, so speak with one of them if you need to carpool.

yeah, I've been keeping it pretty darn simple - mostly bananas, really. Similar to you, Olivia, I shop around when I can, and pick up good deals on citrus, apples, grapes, and the rare cheap tropical fruit. Mostly, though, I just pick up non-org bananas for $16/case (40lb/100 bananas) at Aldis. They usually ring it up wrong and end up saving me a few bucks too.

Sav-a-lot, because they order from both the Savalot distributor and Caido (Caydo?), a much higher end distributor, they can get anything I want, as long as I pay for it ;) the Savalot stuff is cheapest. I can order organic anything from the dist's, and often pick up the "overripes" from the store. The folks who work there are great, and I know the produce manager by name (great lady). They are always amazed (and love) that I can clean them out of their cheap "overripe" fruit :)

In general, though, I haven't been bothering too much with variety, preferring to eat simply and to save on time (grad student schedule). I'll get loads of variety in the spring/summer/fall. And I haven't been getting much organic stuff lately. It sucks, but I'm having trouble as is staying afloat on just fruit. In the meantime, I'm making TONS of banana smoothies. :)

i don't think it is easy to give a definite answer on how much produce costs, since it really varies. what i am doing is i am stopped at the bog grocery chains often (the 3 that are along my extended bike route), and always have bags and a basket with me to buy masses of fruit. and very often i find a good deal for some items. a few weeks ago it was one dollar per pineapple, so i carries home 15 on my bike :) Took 2 weeks to ripen fully, but it was worth the deal. the other day thy had 10 oranges for 2 dollars, so i took about a hundred. both were not organic, but i don't care so much if oranges are (they were really juicy and delicious). i order dates from the bautista, i don't think you can get better deals, and i get a box of bananas each week from the clintonville co-op, about 100 bananas in there for 28 dollars.

the problem around here are really organic greens. they are so expensive. the kroger in columbus even has no organic greens (no organic produce in general, except some bananas and some apples which still look to glossy for me to be fully trusted).

the secret for me to not spend too much money on fruit is really to have mono-days, as of now i am mostly consuming oranges and dates and bananas, lettuce and tomatos. and then i am ordering tropical fruits once a month from jourdan to spice it up. some papaya, some canistel, some chocolate sapote,...

if you happen to come up with a list for ohio, please distribute!

I talked to my local Sav-a-Lot (Athens) and they have been hooking me up with ordering in bulk - they typically give me wholesale +5-10%. Sweet deal when good stuff is in season. Other than that, Kroger for organics/greens. Aldis for cheap bananas. I'm down to less than $10/day.
