I have a possible opportunity to get fruit from NYC every so often, maybe once a month (I am in Connecticut) and want to know the best place to go? China Town?
I have tried searching the forum and google and have found that some people go to New Generation Produce. How is that currently?
I do prefer good quality produce as my system is extremely sensitive to ripeness and to too many pesticides. However, at this point all that is really available near me are organic apples and some oranges and everything else is both imported AND conventional. If it were one or the other I could handle it, but that's a bit too much. However, for some different fruits and a wider variety of vitamins and minerals, I think I'd like be alright for the next few months while I am in Connecticut. Of course, I would love to just fly somewhere tropical and pick my own...
Anyway, any tips for good fruit in NYC?? I am really really craving mamey sapote. Very badly. Will I find it this time of year? What will I find? And where is the best place to go?
thanks everyone! <3

New Generation is conventional stuff only. That's the downside. The upside is that because of the huge selection, you'll find some good quality ripe stuff.
Also, the prices are decent, but not out of this world. Even though you're buying wholesale amounts, certain produce are basically retail prices, while other ones are significantly under retail.
Mammeys are very hit and miss in NYC. I see them sometimes at random Trade Fair supermarkets, but it's rare, and the quality varies greatly.
Thanks for the feedback Bart!
It looks like I need somewhere closer to the Connecticut border than Brooklyn...Manhattan would be better.
Know of any good places?
Permalink Reply by Bart M on March 1, 2012 at 4:54am I don't know of any places similar to NGP in Manhattan. I doubt that one exists there :(
But if you're driving in from CT, NGP is actually closer than anywhere in lower manhattan (like chinatown), and considering the state of manhattan traffic, it's probably more convenient and quicker. NGP is very close to route 278 so you won't be doing much city driving.
I hope you find something that works for you, I know that this time of year, it's slim pickens!

Check out the farmers market in union square (15th street) in Manhattan. Also trader joes has 100 organic bananas for 29 bucks, conventional for 19 bucks. Thats on 22nd and 6th avenue. It's within walking distance from the farmers market. Lastly that I know of is Stiles Farmers market on 52nd and 9th avenue, keep an eye out its small. The produce there is really cheap but you can ask the owner there for info about the level of pesticides, and they also sometimes have organic.
Hope that helped :-)
