Eating high quantities of fruit really puts a person in touch with the intimate details of the fruit: how it ripens, the insides of seeds, the fiber of peels, the flavors of cores.
What are some things you know about a fruit that most people never think about?
What parts are surprisingly edible? What do you eat fruit-leaves-skin-seeds-cores-and-all?
I will admit this confession with a shroud of guilt: I just discovered how delicious papaya seeds are! They are lovely and soft and taste just like spicy radishes.
Now, as I'm impatiently waiting for those papayas to ripen, I think longingly of eating the fruit with its seeds and the delicious combo they make, like a sassy fruit salad.
So where's the guilt? From all the seeds I scraped away and ignored for years…= (
What fruity tricks do you know?

Permalink Reply by Stephanie McClennon on February 25, 2012 at 3:40pm you really eat all the seeds from a papaya? i can't stand them. too bitter for me :S they're antiparasitic, though, so there's that. if you can eat them all, that's amazing. i usually try to eat two or three but just can't do it. i guess it makes sense that i can't eat radishes or onions anymore. they're too harsh for my taste buds. dates are absolutely perfect, though :)

Yeah, I never thought to try them until I came across a Juliano recipe for "caviar" using berries and marinated papaya seeds. So I thought I'd try one and let me tell you, radish was not what I was expecting!
Since I'm still in transition to a high-fruit diet, those harsh foods still aren't so removed for me. Spicy papaya, who knew?
Dates are absolutely perfect!

Permalink Reply by silke on May 22, 2012 at 8:25am from a papaya, i eat everything. seeds & skin. it's so much more satisfying!
i eat mangos with their skin, & kiwis & sapote. sometimes pineapple if i get one that is really ripe (tree-ripened!) ... i like the seeds of durian & those of rambutan.
some seeds, like those of cherries or cherimoyas, can't be broken with the teeth but you can swallow them if you want to. i know that there are some seeds that have to go through someones intestinal tract to become able to germinate.

I also love mangos with their skin.
I also eat grapes with their seeds.
In Costa Rica (where my family comes from) there's a remedy for stomach aches: pineapple tea. You make the tea by boiling the skin in water and it does indeed taste like pineapple tea.
Raw version: pineapple skins in water placed in a jar in the sun, gently warmed. Doesn't need to be for stomach aches, just for enjoying!
Never heard of rambutan?

Permalink Reply by HolisticHealthDetective on May 22, 2012 at 10:15pm Ohhhhhhh!!! Yes yes yes!
I LOVE them; they're one of my all time faves ever in the fruit world!! I know them by 2 different names. In Costa Rica we call them Mamon Chinos. In English they also go by lychee. Where are they called rambutan?
I eat their seeds too. We're lucky that a international produce store carries them for a few weeks per year but you PAY for them, sadly. And they don't have the same color or vitality.
I used to eat these guys kilos at a time. In fact, mamon season was always my very favorite in CR. There were these green mamones that came out first, and then the red ones. I was crazy about both of them. I don't want to claim bragging rights but there couldn't have been a person in all of CR that consumed as many mamones as I did; I used to joke that they were my crack.
Story time: One time I bought like 3 huge bags of them before going on a plane so I could enjoy them for a week or so and then realized that they would take them away from me when we landed, so--unwilling to surrender them--I worked steadily on a week's supply for a span of several hours as we cruised high above the ocean. I tried to give lots away too but no one wanted them. The girl next to me must have thought I was nuts (bananas!) but by the time we landed I had polished them off. Then, because my hands and probably clothes and baggage had lingering mamon juice and scent on them, a fruit-sniffing police dog and his officer caught up with me at the baggage carousel and searched all my stuff and I had to open up bags and pockets. Everyone gathered around hoping there would be a drug bust or so and a cool arrest, and even the officer seemed disappointed at not being able to find anything incriminating. Sorry everyone, but I was just being fruity, that's all! = )
These were my beloved culprits:
Ahh, just looking at them makes me go wild! I wish I could just pluck them from the picture!

Permalink Reply by silke on May 23, 2012 at 4:15am they are called rambutan eg in german, but obviously also in english, as this wikipedia article calls them like this ;)
these are different fruit: rambutan (see link above) and lychee http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lychee ... those on your pic i know as longan. and there are also longkong ... all these grow in thailand where i wish i could go some day ... hopefully not too far away :) ... oh, costa rica, i'd also love to go there!
Permalink Reply by HolisticHealthDetective on May 23, 2012 at 5:32am Oh yes...longan....I remember that name! I heard it long ago as another name for the fruit I know as mamon chino. In the store they sell the lychees you showed me a picture of, and I'll have to pay attention this year to what they have labeled for the rambutan/mamon chino/longan fruit. = )
It seems to me that they are all from the lychee family, or whatever family lychees come from? Not that I'm doing any research!
I'm really trying to get back to Costa Rica. I'm learning how to organize group trips with folks who want to visit there so I can see my family with a goal in mind of about 4-6 times per year. I should look more into planning trips around certain fruit seasons! = )
