Hi Patty,

I'm in the same boat and trying to get this raw lifestyle but I keep messing up...
Comment by Patty Jane on June 6, 2014 at 7:35am

I am so excited for this support community for a raw high carb vegan lifestyle. I know it will work for me because I have basically done it in the past but stopped eating as much fruit as I needed and lost my way. So happy to have a community that doesn't want to restrict fruit intake! Woot  Woot. This sideways photo is one of the "before" photos I took today. I will be blogging on my own page if you want to stop in and follow my weight loss journey. I'll probably post in the blog 2 to three times a week. This isn't my first dog and pony show. I've been 100 percent raw before.  I've been high raw before. I've been 120 pounds below my top weight. Today at 215ish I am about 70 pounds above my goal weight of 145 to 150. I have MS so it's especially important for me to keep my weight down. Love and light and blessings to everyone on this path with me. xoxoxox

Do I really have to workout? :( Or can I just maintain the high carb, low fat, raw till 4pm way of eating and still maintain my weight?

I eat sufficient amounts of fruit for breakfast and lunch, and even for snacks (mostly bananas), and for dinner, I like to have a high-carb cooked meal. Currently trying to avoid too much salt, and just adding teeny pinches to add flavor to dishes.

Anyway, I'm human, and sometimes I can really feel LAZY. And sometimes my schedule gets demanding (I'm in college, and I also work part time). And the only times I get t rest are the times I procrastinate on all my work. Haha! :D But whenever I do have the time, I throw in 30-minute workouts around 3 days a week.

So yeah. Please help me! I just need an answer to this question I've been asking for months already. Is it really possible to maintain my weight (I'm fairly thin) even if I just keep eating this way and not workout? Or do I really have to add a bit of exercise?

I agree, it does seem taboo which is why, it seems, some of us have kept quiet.  The creators of this site used to remove any talk about eating cooked food and now, years later, they are eating cooked carbs so maybe they will have a little more slack with this type of conversation now.  I don't believe eating slightly less than you are burning (if your goal is to lose excess fat) constitutes starving oneself.

Just want to say thank you again to both of you, both very helpful! I too was under the impression that talking about eating less than 2500/day on this site was taboo, nice to hear someone say otherwise. :)

Hello Ai-Nisa,

thank you for your kind words.  If this site wants to directly contradict what Dr Graham teaches, I'm not sure why his book 80-10-10 is considered required reading for all members.  If we follow what he teaches in his book, each person would consume a different amount of calories according to their weight, height, activity level, sex etc.. If a person is not losing weight when they want to, he would suggest they eat more vegetables, exercise more and eat less calorie dense fruits.  He usually finds people struggle to eat the quantity of food required for their own body and lifestyle when they start 811, which is why he doesn't talk a lot about calorie restriction.  He would also recommend everyone have a highly active exercise regime to get the best results from 811.  However, that's not always practical and the calorie requirements drop substantially for someone who needs to sit all day for work and only has time for a little exercise, which makes up a large number of people who follow 811.  Sorry that you were left to experiment with what worked for you in terms of calorie consumption.  The numbers are clear in Dr Graham's 80-10-10 and he would reiterate and clarify those numbers for anyone who asked on his forum.

Hello Bronwyn,

Yes, you are absolutely right! I have followed you on Dr. Graham's Raw and Sports forum on vegsource and you always offer such sound advice and guidance.  Thank you so much! However, on 30bananasaday it appears that any mention of reducing calories is deemed equivalent to calorie restriction.  It is strongly stressed that ALL women eat a minimum of 2500 calories a day; regardless of age, current weight, activity level or lifestyle.  It seems any mention of weight gain on an 811 diet elicits the response of  'eat more', 'wait a year for body to stabilize', 'it's not possible to gain weight so you must be cheating in some way', etc. Unfortunately, I've experienced it first hand which lead me to follow the path that works for me.  Given this, I don't feel comfortable sharing on this forum.  I usually read every now and then and move on, but for some reason Lila spoke to me and I wanted to help her.

Hello Ai-Nisa,

sorry you feel you can't talk about your calorie intake openly here.  This site is based on Dr Graham's teachings and his book is considered required reading when a member joins.  He wouldn't suggest much more than 2000 calories a day for your sex and activity.  Probably slightly less. His book states how many calories we should be consuming, why add another 1000 or 2000 to what he suggests when he's the one who invented the program and has taught it for decades?

Best wishes

You are quite welcome, Lila.  It's so hard to write anything that may go against the tenets of this forum for fear of being 'deleted' or 'rejected'.  I wish you the best in finding out what works best for Lila.  Please keep us posted on your progress.

Thank you SO MUCH Al-Nisa for writing that. This has been my experience too, I've been doing 2500-3000 cals per day and gaining weight... I was so so so unhappy about that, I've finally decided to experiment with eating less. Right now I'm averaging probably 2400 for the last week and I've already lost a couple pounds. I'm still in experiment mode, not sure how many cals I'll end up at but it's so awesome to hear that others are having the same experience. :)
