Some guidelines

Welcome! Feel free to talk about cooked VEGAN food here.  We suggest you stick to discussing high carb cooked vegan foods like potatoes, root vegetables, rice with minimal dressing if any as they are the most healthful cooked food choices. Below is a transition diet I 'created' for those of you coming from a SAD lifestyle and wanting to make the switch to a high carb RAW vegan lifestyle.

Here are some guidelines that we support, put together by the super helpful PK

  • Cooking is for emergencies only such as financial reasons and or there is no ripe fruit available, then low fat cooked starches may be an acceptable back up plan.
  • It's always healthier to steam than any other cooked method.
  • Corn and Root vegetables digest better than grains like rice.
  • Always choose foods that are vegan and promote compassion towards our fellow earthlings. We do not support the discussion of non-vegan cooked foods in this group or on the 30BaD forum.
  • Avoid dairy products for compassionate and health reasons:  http://www.notmilk.com/
  • Cooking denatures food.  Try to plan for at least 75% of the diet to be raw fruits and leafy greens.
  • Cooked foods should still be low fat for weight control and cardiovascular health and optimum energy.
  • Continue to focus on high carb high calorie sources and the more nutrient dense, the better.
  • Fruits do not mix well with cooked foods and or grains.  An idea is to eat fruit meals during the day, and perhaps end the day with a big salad and bowl of steamed rice.
  • Cooking should be simple, with as little processing and as few ingredients as possible, and foods should resemble their original states such as steamed broccoli verses cookies.
  • This is not a license to kill foods with salt and spices or to eat McDeaths french fries.  A bowl of steamed rice is fine, hold the oil, salt, and spices.
  • Continue to follow other guidelines such as avoiding booze, tea, coffee, soda, drugs, etc.  Read more here: http://www.rawfoodexplained.com/science.html
  • Cooking is for emergencies only, and not for a transition tool.  We still recommend going 100% low fat raw fruit and leafy green for optimum digestion and health results.  As we have said before, one cannot ride two horses (or bikes;D) with the same bum.  For best results and to get over addictions, just do it 100% if and when possible.
  • While high carb cooked vegan fare makes for the best backup plan when we're not able to find delicious raw fruits and vegetables, the use of toxic ingredients defeats the benefits of this fallback position. Therefor, in all cooked-food discussions, we expect members to abide by our list of unsupported ingredients. If you're going to eat cooked vegan food, keep it simple: bare cooked potatoes or rice, steamed veggies and such.
  • Whenever possible, choose ripe fruits and leafy greens.  Primates and humans cannot manufacture vitamin C, and must consume it in fruit and greens, or they may develop sub-clinical symptoms of scurvy which could include things like skin ulcerations and mouth infections.  Grains and some beans do not have vitamin C, and some beans and potatoes that do have minimal amounts, may have the vitamin C rendered useless via cooking.
  • Continue to consider that some of the cheaper so called starch foods have little or no vitamin C, and are usually high in protein.  These foods may cause an acid condition in the body that can contribute long term to arthritis, osteoporosis, tooth decay, kidney problems and kidney stones and cancer.  Grains can also cause indigestion, Crohn's disease, irritable bowel syndrome, celiac disease, colitis, constipation, diarrhea, bloating, gas, and indigestion.
  • Again, it is recommended that as soon as circumstances allow, that one should resume eating a low fat raw fruit and tender leafy green based diet.  For some folks, that may be as easy as downgrading the house and car payment.
  • To save a little money now and go the starch route, only to get sick and have to pay for doctors and medications later on is a decision one will have to ask themselves if it is worth the risk involved.

BTW, I have known millionaires and people making over 100K a year who cannot afford fruit because they are maxed out financially on the McMansions they have bought and the beamers and benzes they drive.

Thanks folks!

Dovima, the only other options you have as far as the $9 salary is concerned is these - go to college and get a degree in something that pays a helluvalot more.  Barring that, your only other options is putting your stuff in storage and moving into an SUV.  Cut the rent, utilities out of of your expenses.  I have considered doing that to get control of my money.

Oh sure, i was already several times fully HCRV with almost only fruits and some nuts and seeds , but sometimes not enough money to eat only fruit all month.

Comment by Jon Fergus on June 16, 2012 at 11:02am

@Olaf. Yep. The full effects of HCRV cannot and will not be felt until one is fully HCRV long-term. It's like this: you'll feel good and healthy on HCCV; you'll have energy and all that (it's a good diet, for sure). But then, once you go HCRV, you'll realize just what it feels like to thrive! And then you'll look back at the days when you were HCCV and finally understand the difference between that lifestyle and the 811 lifestyle. :)

You mean even if you have no stomach problems to eat much fruit after cooked meals that you will miss the experience to eat HCRV on travel or while festivals and dont get glowing eyes showing that you re full of energy. :D

"... you seem to be seeing LFRV as something to commit to, whereas I see it as something interesting and promising which I'd like to play with and try to make work if I can."

Ah, I see. Yes, that is where we differ. The thing with HCRV is that it really doesn't mix well with cooked foods, so those who have become fully HCRV have eventually had to do so through commitment. Those who 'dabble' only ever end up dabbling, counting their raw experience in weeks or days, but never really quite living the fullness of the lifestyle. To reap the full benefits of HCRV will require, at some point, a commitment to it.

Awesome, Tom!  Well-stated.  As that one Costa Rica raw food dude (Sundance or something like that) once said, it's a good diet, but a terrible religion.  It may not be the most practical thing for all people in all places at all times, but it could be a great thing for many.

Thanks for the advice everyone.  I didn't realise supermarkets sold fresh dates - I'll check it out.  I thought they were all dried.

Jon:  no hard feelings, I just think you've got me wrong.  I've been LFRV.  It was great for 2 weeks then I started losing energy so I began having 1 cooked meal a day which I've been doing for the last few weeks.  Now I feel strong again.  Why didn't LFRV work for me first time?  Not enough sleep?  Not enough water?  Under eating?  Over eating?  Not enough salads / greens?  Would some green juices help?  None of these issues are going to be easy to experiment with (apart from over eating, which I doubt was the problem) while I'm camping so I'll leave it till I get back.  It's not about making excuses or not being truly ready - I think where you're missing me is this:  you seem to be seeing LFRV as something to commit to, whereas I see it as something interesting and promising which I'd like to play with and try to make work if I can.  Trying to make it work while camping in a country not set up for it is, IMHO, a bit crazy.  Waiting till I get back makes a lot more sense to me.  I look forward to it because, as I said, I'm feeling ready to try again.

I agree that packets of dates are the most portable. You don't need to buy dried dates - you can go into Sainsbury's, Tesco's or Asda and get packs of 9 or 10 fresh medjool dates. You could take them out of the packs and put them into one largish bag. On the other hand if you can eat plain baked potatoes, they're probably the next best thing to bananas and dates for carbs.

and here I'm being compared to an alcoholic because I'm not giving up cooked food today :/

Interestingly, people who have treated me as if I have an eating disorder used to have eating disorders themselves, and here I have Jon - an ex-alcoholic - comparing me to an alcoholic.

Haha... oh Tom. I wasn't comparing you to an alcoholic. I was comparing your reasoning to the reasoning of an alcoholic. I could just have easily compared it to the hundreds of people I've seen pass through 30BaD with their excuses as to why they can't be HCRV yet (none of whom have yet to become HCRV, go figure!). And from your posts, I see plenty of these kinds of excuses - oh, so many barriers! There are people living HCRV in much more difficult situations than you describe. It's all about wanting it. Like I said, when you're truly ready, you won't care about the excuses, you'll just do it. But hey, if you don't, at least you're vegan already (the most important step)!

As far as what to bring while camping: dates, dates and more dates.
