Does anyone attend the University of Hawaii at Manoa? I am applying to business school there for a transfer. I could use advice on where to live if i get accepted. :)

Whoops, it got posted with out the last letter.

Another question: where do I find young coconut here, I see all sorts of mature coconuts for high prices.

Is a young coconut simply a green or unripe one, or a mid ripe one of a certain species? Chinatown is convenient, but I am between Ewa Beach, Honolulu, and 20 miles or so up the east coast.....

I arrived yesterday on Oahu, looking for place and a job, have just enough resources to stay to search for a couple of weeks and not need more from new friends and new aquaintences than advice, opinions, and perhaps introductions.
A co-worker of my wife's from 25 years ago has offered (I have accepted, and currently there) an air mattress on his livingroom floor till Saturday when his small condo fills up with visiting family.

I am looking for hospitality job at Waikiki (for flexibility and ability to trade shifts) in the bellman, car valet, or banquet waiting (on-call banquet waiting also appeals to me). I hope to get a place living on a boat at the marina close by, and willing to pay the slip or mooring fee, maybe more. I am reliable, and have vested interest in being the perfect tenant as I maintain airport security clearance for side jobs.
I do not make big messes in a galley, as I focus on raw food preparation. And of course I do not smoke, and am living out of carry-on baggage, not even checked.
I have dozens of skills in the trades, from cleaning to maintenance to my over-the-top specially, carpet repair.

If anyone can help me out, I am excited to be open to community and networking for the first time in my life. I have always relied on my reputation and referrals, thereby depriving myself of having "community" around me....
I plan on doing volunteer work locally in the ESL area, and environmental cleanup, any suggestions?

I am "Rock" here in real life too, not to be confused with "The Rock", my name comes from a geology backgroun

Thank you so much Kristin.  Lots of good info there.  I can't wait to see city of refuge again, that place is awesome.  I will definitely keep my eye out for the fruit stands on the way there - as well as all the others you have mentioned.  I am really looking forward to trying all the exotic fruits that I am unable to find here in the midwest!

Since you are staying at Waikoloa, two good markets somewhat close to you are Keauhou and Waimea. Both are Saturdays. Keauhou has much more of a fruit emphasis (including Ken Love's stand) and Waimea is more of a veggie market, but also with famous Waimea tomatoes and strawberries and some other fruits that you won't see at other Big Island markets. There are two markets in Waimea, and the one a little bit east of town may be the better market. It was awesome when I first went two years ago (try the lettuce from the stand on the east edge, cheap and primo), but (at least as of last month) Waimea area had gotten a ton of rain, so the crops were suffering and a lot of vendors were absent. The downtown Kona permanent (Tues-Sun) is a good source of cheap staple papayas but it is not a specialty market, for example, many vendors stock mangos flown in from central and south america (which drives me nuts, especially when they try to pass them off to distant tourists as Hawaiian mangos). There is also at least one Waikablowa :) market but on my only visit to that market, there wasn't much happening. And finally, if you will be heading to Captain Cook area (which is worth it even if not for the fruit, since City of Refuge and other bays are incredible) there is the South Kona fruit stand and another fruit stand just north of there that had the best black sapotes i've had in my life, plus some of the other harder to find (in kona area) treats like mamey, chico, etc. Hilo market honestly did not live up to my hopes when i went, but we did get a white pineapple there which is worth the extra couple bucks, and it was one of the few places we saw durian available, if you are seeking that. Have fun!

Looking forward to my trip to the big island next month.  Trying to figure out where all the farmers markets are.  The one in Hilo sounds pretty good.  I know there is also some in Kona.  But we will be staying in Waikoloa.  Anyone know if there's any up there?  thanks!
