Well, this far down asouth winter doesn't seem that far off. Its cold, rainy and windy. Still, summer is not oficially over just yet. Its cool to think of you guys heading into spring-it makes my lot more bearable.
I'm planting lettuces, silverbeet, kale, parsley, and celery at the moment. I'm really trying to build my immune system up for the coming flu season. Especially when I'm trapped in a warm room with a bunch of damp nursing students who are intermittently sneezing and/or coughing-ew!
Interesting lecture the other day on osteoperosis. Apparently its on the decrease as people are now more aware of the condition. The lecturer went on to emphasize that one of the most important dietary considerations for prevention was the regular consumption of dark, leafy greens. When she asked the class the amount of people who grew and consumed their own greens-out of 100 students two of us raised our hand. I was blown away. Two?! The upside, fellow students have started to notice my glowing good health and have started questioning what I'm doing and why. I have noticed people I hang out with have switched to salads or fruit for lunch. That's cool. Its all about getting the message out there, however you can :)
Lekoma, thank you for your gentle way of being in the world.
Comment by Anne Njagi on February 12, 2012 at 8:34pm i think its good to find out where we are when it comes to diet. i think we might find that we are all here since we want to share this remarkable story called 811diet and i have found that others are here for a different agenda.
likewise misinformation starts to spread
Lekoma, so glad to hear that no one was hurt in the fire. And minimal damage. I'd love any insights from the Square Foot Gardener. I was at a vegan potluck the other night and noticed one of the books on the shelves called Lasagna Gardening. Have you ever heard of it? I flicked through and it looked like the No Dig method in the extreme. The author recommended mounding the layers(like compost, mulch, etc) on top of grass. Interesting.
Interesting question, Anne. Can I ask why?
Comment by Anne Njagi on February 11, 2012 at 11:31pm are we all 811diet people or are some of you transitioning?
I meant too thank you the other day, Lekoma, for those words of wisdom about composting. They were much needed and gratefully received.
Attention new gardeners! In regards to my little comfrey spray rant the other day-BEWARE! Comfrey spray smells revolting and if you get it on your skin it sticks like skunk. Pair of gloves and really old clothes ought to see you right.
Hi! I am new to the site. I am interested in Organic Gardening. I used to garden alot but haven't really done very much lately. When I was growing up we had a yearly garden that I was invoved with most of the time. There is alot of interest now in growing your own which is so fantastic. I think we all need some information on how to grow our own food. I will be very interested reading the posts.
Lekoma, I'm aware that envy is not a healthy emotion. But OMG, that sounds amazing. Its always been a dream of mine, so to meet someone who is living that dream is pretty remarkable.
You were spot on about the flowers(in my picture). Those and borage are my main campanion plants for my veg. I also added some petunias, poppies, cornflowers and about a dozen different herbs. Everything is doin so well I will keep up the companion planting.
The only sprays I use on my garden is homemade comfrey(which I grow specifically for this purpose) and seaweed spray. I don't mind sharing my plants with insects. What I tend to find is that if I'm dilligent with fortnightly seaweed/comfrey sprays, the strongest plants flourish and don't attract the insects that damage it. But there always seems to be one or two "sacrificial" plants that the bugs flock to and either eat to the ground or do enough damage that it doesn't produce. I have also started to leave my plants in that have gone to seed. I read somewhere that they attract beneficial insects. I must be doing something right with my peripheral pest control, I'm managing to harvest some mighty fine veg :)
I will FB my niece and see if she's anywhere near Mt. Dora. It sounds awesome.
