Comment by Ben-nana on April 6, 2013 at 11:42am Just wanted to share my new favorite fruit for this time of year in FL, it is called Pitanga or Suriname Cherry. I live in Delray Beach and it is grown on purpose and by accident everywhere around here. It is super high in vitamin C and Vitamin A precursor. I have been foraging this fruit on my bike rides around town. Many gardeners around here are Haitian and like to grow organically, I try to get it from their yards and in return I bring them pigeon peas or what they call pois congo, which I use as a nitrogen fixer for my fruit trees. The only people I know that eat it profusely are Brazilian and appare
ntly it grows wild like a weed down there. It has a unique flavor a little sharp because of the high vitamin C content but tons of sugar when fully ripe... delicious. They are also very easy to grow but take a few years to produce. Anybody got other exotics to add to the list? I have Pitanga seeds too for anybody who is nearby and wants to grow them.
