Booo! I dropped $12 for a who-knows-how-long-it-has-been-frozen 5 kilo Durian in SLC, UT. A clear sign it's time to get out of the states and live the tropical dream.

That would be one of the cheapest drugs ever, here in Sri Lanka. Full season right now and I'm enjoying it for 50 rupees (about 45 cents) per fruit!

Had my first Durian a couple days ago. Now I'm addicted -- this is gonna cost more than being a full time druggie. Thanks a lot guys! :p

Err.. I just wanna inform you all. Here in Sumatra, Indonesia, looks like durian season is coming. Because I saw durians in our local market this morning. Probably you guys wanna hace durian feast here in Sumatra. lol.

Anyway, I'm a newbie here and still learning, I would appreciate guidance and advice from you guys! :)

I join as more of a faith visionary, rather than a committed devotee, as I've only sampled the spikey football twice.
The 1st time from one of those silly plastic boxes was loathsome, what with the overpowering rotten onion smell.
But last night, my 2nd experience, this time frozen whole, was actually right on the border between not too bad and pretty good.
I'll definately tempt the fates again and yet again, and may even invite this guy to join me! ;)

Victoria, I saw gan yao on farmers market at bkk for 2000 bath a kilo, but it was for cut durian. That was monster expensive. We got some pieces on sale for 160 bath which were ultra ripe and that was the real deal.... Gan yao is one of the most delicious, but it has to be ripe good...

hey victoria,

it's gan yao, and i've heard it is one of the most expensive varieties.. here's an article that talks about it a bit: http://www.digitaljournal.com/article/34358 (the 8th paragraph from the bottom)

yea i made the mistake a few times of trying get into durian that were underripe, when needing to move on to a different location or something.. if this happens next time i'm there i will happily give them away.. i still have a scar on my forearm from when a knife slipped trying to hack into one.. remember, a truly ripe durian never requires more than your hands to open easily

Hello everyone! I need some education:-)
Not long ago I encountered a vendor along a street. He was selling durians for 140 Baht/kg. I asked him, why it was quite expensive comparing to what I was buying at the local market for 40-45 Baht/kg.

He explained, that they were different... He called this type of durian a name, which sounded to my ear similar to "Kan Yao" or something like that:-)))

Yes, these durians looked different from what I get on daily basis here, in Chiang Mai. They were roundish with long stems. When I ate one, it was nice, but probably not ripe enough to my liking. Well, at the beginning I thought I tasted some nutty flavor...

I know there are enormous amount of different varieties of durian! But could anyone give me a brief description of this "Kan Yao" one?!
