Despite the chemical contamination we still enjoy durian while in the states (it's worth the toxins :D), although we would prefer to get it organic.

* SIGH* We will visit S.E. Asia someday ...

What about durians in Thailand? I am a bit scared now as I read about farmers spraying/injecting the fruit with all the chemicals (OMG!)...

But I saw some Harley's videos showing organic durian! I really would like to know how and where exactly to get organic durian (and other fruit and veggies) in Thailand?! (P.S. I will be travelling on my own so at the moment I don't think I'll be able to get a bicycle and go miles from farm to farm... not yet, unfortunately...but one day I'll be there:-)))

i learned that you should look for those that look very full, or even bloated.. this shows that they have been given the opportunity to mature fully

I look for a durian with brown skin (my experience is the DARK brown ones aren't tasty) and smells sweet.

Andrew (pictured) simply uses instinct to pick the tastiest one.

Could anyone give me some sound advice on how to chose a very tasty ripe durian?! I will appreciate any guidance!

Sounds GREAT Dr Bob! Panama is 8 degrees north of the equator--we need to grow it here.

Andrew asked for durian the first couple of days since we've been in Panama ...

Have just sent a month in Davao, Philippines where the king of fruits reigns supreme and is available fresh 12mths of the year. I struggle to grow them here in tropical Australia(monsoonal climate) They prefer equatorial conditions .Davao is 7 degrees N, Cairns is17 deg sth. Moving to Davao this year. Enuff said!

Yes, SO true, we are planning to have a Durian party when we can hook up with a good supplier. It is a wonderful celebration food. Makes birthday cake look as silly as it really is!

Durian is the ULTIMATE Party food! Yesterday we had people over and we served it.

Andrew gets so excited every time he eats it!

Do you live in the UK?? In Europe they have to label stuff as GMO legally, in the US and Canada they do not. The FDA or USDA does not want to scare people away from eating GMOs so they are not labelled.
