Colins new book is fantastic I have listened to it two times and it just came out yesterday@ Get the audio version from Audible.  easy to digest that way over adn over while you are working or diving. spread this to the other vegan and other groups.

I have used this book thousands of time to challenge meat eaters adn high protein eaters claims. The NEW book is really amazing ("WHOLE")  be sure you get it...

In regards to Minger's claims about Dr. Ornish's and Dr. Esselstyn's studies being successful due to removal of processed foods, I believe this is misleading because these doctors did not appear to strongly advise their patients to reduce intake of processed carbohydrate rich foods until more recently, not when they first started reversing heart disease in the late 1980's.

I have made a couple posts regarding a number of populations who predominantly subsisted on organic pasture raised animal foods with little or no access to processed foods, including the pre-contact Eskimo/Inuit, the nomadic Kirghiz plainsmen, and the Nomadic Argentinean Gaucho who suffered from high rates of cancer and cardiovascular disease at a young age.

Thanks Chris.  One point that Denise makes which I think is misleading is that the reason vegan doctors like McDougal, Esselstyn, Ornish etc have succeeded is because they had their clients stop using refined and packaged foods.  Undoubtedly there are benefits from making these changes but that doesn't mean that eating meat is healthy.  And isn't it true that with the WW1 & WW2 studies along with the China Study these populations didn't have access to tons of refined or packaged products prior to their dropping meat from the diet.  Consequently the reflected health there relates only to animal product consumption and has nothing to do with refined grains or packaged products.  I'm sure there are plenty of studies that show this as well, this just seems to be an obvious point she doesn't account for.

Look for exclusively breast fed studies. Beware of studies that assess fat content of breast milk over time since measurements are often independent of breast feeding frequency. The fat concentration will be higher with decreased breast feeding frequency as the baby integrates other foods in the diet, too. If (as in most studies) there is no account for the frequency of breast feeding, in addition to the actual contents, then the higher fat composition results from the emptying of the breasts, 70% as a function of breast feeding frequency, not as a function of the overall fat requirements of the growing baby. The data is distorted by the implementation of other foods in the diet.

Research continues to reveal that nutrient composition in breast milk tends to be relatively stable, regardless of diet. Types or ratios of fat intake are still important for the mother but the amount of fat intake does not affect breast milk fat composition. This is in contrast to popular paleo diet urban legends and businessmen, who emphasize the importance of consuming more dietary protein or fat for nursing mothers. Psychological stress experienced by the mother has a greater impact on breast milk composition than diet.

Human milk has the lowest protein ratios of all mammals, known.

As infants, higher cholesterol intake among breastfed infants resulted in downregulation of endogenous cholesterol production (Cruz, 1994).

You're right on the milk issue Paul, yes to all the questions! :)

As far as what paleolithic people ate, sorry I can't help you there.. I'm not really interested in what they did back then, I focus on what's ethical, healthy and sustainable to do/consume today.

When looking at composition of human mother's milk its clear that protein is much lower than protein fanatics would like to believe.  What about the high fat content.  Is my guess correct that its only there for the rapid growth of the child and that as child ages the need for fat drops off dramatically?  Does this phenomena happen with other species?

Thanks Rawbert.  Just read an article on huff post where the author claimed to be a fan of Paleo and yet said things that disagreed with Cordain.  It was said that Cordain then sent a bunch of names of scientists who supposedly back up this claim that paleolithic man ate large quantities of meat.  Now I've seen McDougal with Dominy refuting this.  Can you guys recommend any works that show more of what Dominy is talking about ie: paleolithic women/men as starch eaters.  Thanks

@Paul,

Cells get glucose deprived when you die.. you can't 'starve' cells, your body must maintain normal blood glucose levels even during a fast, otherwise you die.

Healing occurs because you stop loading your body with toxins so the body has a chance to do some house cleaning and recovery.
