30BaD note: juicing (without the pulp) is not ideal for most people, it's far better to eat the whole fruit. why?

Comment by Jon Fergus on May 8, 2013 at 3:55am Just an addition to the subject of vitamins and minerals. I asked Swayze Foster about her book and she tells me that "Chapter 6 is all about the essential nutrients; how much we actually need and how to meet these requirements on a raw vegan diet." Swayze is very knowledgeable, provides health coaching/mentoring, etc.,—she's a trusted name in the HCRV movement—so I would highly recommend that anyone interested in learning about vitamins and minerals check out The Science of Raw. I'm sure it's filled with a lot of other very helpful information as well. Thing about Swayze is she doesn't rely on pseudo-science or woo-woo spiritual hocus pocus—she sources everything scientifically and approaches HCRV from that angle.
Comment by Jon Fergus on May 7, 2013 at 12:09pm In our FAQ there's a bit of info on a few vitamins/minerals. (scroll down to item C.):

There is a definite need for more info on this kind of stuff.
I haven't read it yet, but I suspect Swayze has covered some vits/mins in her book The Science of Raw. So that might be worth checking out too.
Comment by dandelion on May 7, 2013 at 11:21am yes, sources would be great. thanks Jon.
Comment by Michaela on May 7, 2013 at 10:48am yeah I think this is a problem, I know it is for me. that would be a really good article!
Comment by Jon Fergus on May 7, 2013 at 10:35am No prob. I think quite a few people are thrown off because the targets Crono gives them makes it seem like they're missing something, when in reality it's just a bogus target. I hope we can get an article out on the subject soon, addressing each one and providing sources for good targets.
Comment by dandelion on May 7, 2013 at 10:20am Thanks so much for posting the vitamin/mineral targets, John. I've been hunting around for those for a while. Much appreciated! :)
Comment by Jon Fergus on May 7, 2013 at 10:11am Hi apple. Thought I'd reply with some info for everyone:
You can manually adjust the settings in cronometer. Here are a few things to do:
1. Go to the "Profile" page, and under "Macronutrient Ratio Targets" select the LFRV/30BaD option,
2. Then under "Nutritional Targets" on the "General" tab adjust "Energy" to 2500 cals (or for men, 3000), and
3. You can also adjust all the vitamin and mineral requirements, some of which aren't accurate in Crono's default settings. These are the settings I currently use, though I'm still investigating some of these, so don't hold me to them. ;) A few of us have been trying (in our spare time) to put together a list of vitamins/minerals with suggested targets, but that might not be out for a while yet.
Comment by Jon Fergus on May 7, 2013 at 10:03am Hi Steve. Two related reasons why a smoothie should never reach the 'maelstrom':
1. the vortex created sucks air into the smoothie and that air gets swallowed and passes through the digestive system. It becomes 'gas' and 'bloating'.
2. the air sucked into the smoothie increased the oxidation rate of the fruit because more air comes into contact with more surface area of fruit. This is why smoothies will turn brown quickly. The fruit begins to break down before we've swallowed it. (search for 'oxidation' in the 30BaD search feature to learn more).
Ideally, a smoothy mixed just enough to blend the fruit together without reaching this point is what we're aiming for. You want the surface of the smoothie to remain relatively still during the blending process, which is why the 'pulse' feature is so nice.
Hope that helps. :)
