Yael - I am finally losing weight.  IT has taken months of transitioning.  I "needed" the cooked food for a while during this.  Now, when I do cooked, it is only a steamed vegetable.  But, getting here, for some reason, took a long time.  Maybe age, hormones, habits, damage.... (I am 47) I don't know.  But, I am finally almost 100% and feeling so much better and my body is releasing.  There is great wisdom here on this site and I have found it very helpful.  (Lekoma has been amazing - he is quite balanced and insightful!!  There have been others too)  What has struck me is that some get this from one day to the next and transition seemingly over night.  It didn't happen for me that way.  So, just hold on... there are so many ways of doing this.  I know the weight thing is very painful.  Try to eat as much sweet juicy fruit as you can.  Bring it with you everywhere so you are NEVER caught without food.  If you are craving, it means you are hungry.  Dieting has stifled that impulse.  So, it confused me in the beginning.  Now, I do what I am supposed to - I eat!

Yael, you'll lose that water and fruit weight going to the bathroom. :D

Yael, no fear! You are working out every time you get up, and do what you gotta. Everything you do burns calories. Even SLEEPING burns calories. You need to drink more water, yes, and eat more fruit! I know it sounds counter to eat more to lose more- but think, the less fat you put in, the more of your fat you use. It just takes time. But every time you walk to the kitchen to get a banana, you're losing weight. :D

Mara-- so what you are saying is that I won't loose it until I start working out a lot and burn off everything that I ate??  Oh no! Nothing will work unless I work out? I need to drink more, yah??

Thanks so much for answering...

Yael- how much did you gain? Are you accounting the physical weight of what you're eating when you weigh yourself? You're not doing anything wrong, you need patience. If you eat 2000 calories of bananas a day, you're going to weigh  7.5 pounds (6oz per banana, 20 bananas= 120oz) heavier on that day, if you drink 64 oz of water a day (as is recommended) you're going to weigh 4 pounds heavier on that day. 11.5 pounds that is not YOU, every day.

That 11.5 pounds will give you the energy you need to work away your fat, the weight that IS you, without adding more fat to the weight that is you. 3oz of ground beef is 250 calories, with 150 calories of fat. If you had your 2000 calories in beef, that's 24oz (1.5 pounds of beef- which is LIGHTER than 11.5 pounds of fruit.) with 1200 calories of FAT, that will be you.

You are not doing anything wrong. You are doing something right!

Why am I gaining, not loosing?? What am I doing wrong??

j. lyn, a lot of people are going to tell you exactly how many calories they think you need, but really your body is the only thing that can tell you how many calories you need. do you find yourself looking for more sweet (or non-sweet, like starchy) foods after a meal? eat until you're full and not craving any other foods.

Martin, I just read your post where you said you read that it was advised to take salt pills on long runs...Maybe you should read Dr. Bragg's book, he did an experiment with young college students and he himself participated.  They did a long run across some desert and all those who took salt pills were dropping by the way side, (he was elderly when he did this) and he was the only one not taking them and he made it to the finish line.  The point is, make sure of your source and that you do your homework before making a suggestion for people doing long runs to take salt pills.  I haven't done much research on it myself, but would use caution in suggesting them.
