30 Bananas a Day!

This is a place where we can post our favorite farmers' markets and other places to get fruit in the Atlanta area! I hope we all can post our favorite places, including the address and a picture.

My favorite places:

1. Buford Highway Farmer's Market (best for bananas)

5600 Buford Highway NE, Doraville, GA 30340

Large produce selection: these deals below apply to non-organic.
Go for bagged banana deals: 3-4 pounds of perfectly ripe bananas/peppers for .99 or 1.99, respectively - these are the most common deals and happen every week. If you are lucky you might find 4 lbs mangoes or mixed apples for 1.99. Once I got 4 pounds of mangos for 99 cents, but you have to go often to check out the deals, since that doesn't happen often. Also a great place to get lemongrass at .89/lb.

2. H-Mart (best with coupon book)

This is a Korean chain with a great produce selection and deals, deals deals: sign up for the H-Mart card to get a coupon book that comes about every other month. Sadly, no organic produce.

Deals:

9-mango boxed set for 4.99.

9 israel persimmons (each weighs a bit less than a mango) for 4.99.

9 yali pears for 4.99.

Pineapple: 99 cents per.

Those were summer bargains, but winter bargains are good too:

Reading off the card: 4 (large) oranges for 99 cents. 2 bundles spinach for 99 cents.

3. Dekalb Farmer's Market (best organics)

3000 E Ponce De Leon Ave  Decatur, Georgia 30033

It has a bigger organic selection than my personal favorite, Buford Highway, lots of exotic, cheap fruits and vegetables, and has deals on cooked food as well for your other family members. It is really like a step into another world.

Deals: Sour tamarind (.99/lb)

Green vegetables

Local organics

Spices (don't go anywhere else, these are fresher and cheaper)

Nuts, grains, imports, and olives (for the rest of the family)

So these are my favorite places to find fruit. In my opinion, H-Mart is the most consistent in providing bargains: you just don't know if they'll be something you want.

I hope everyone will join in and post their own fruit places: I am especially curious about neighborhood farmers' markets, since I am trying to go organic. I hope this helps!

Thanks for the tips.

I just had my first visit to the Farmers Market in Dekalb two weekends ago.  I was in fruit heaven.  Need to find places closer to my area Columbus.  Anyone know anything?  I am in Atlanta quite frequently though.

Wow!  Laya!  You rock!  Good stuff.  I hit the Gwinnett Farmers Market east of Gwinnett Place Mall on Steve Reynolds and Breckenridge, Duluth,  which sounds similar to the Buford Hwy Market.   I am def gonna check out Buford Hwy!
THANKS

Hi!  I'm brand new to the LFRV lifestyle--two weeks in, to be exact--so hello, everyone.

I live on the south-side in McDonough, so the Forrest Park Farmer's Market (otherwise known as the State Farmer's Market) is pretty close to me.  I was there yesterday, but there weren't many stalls open yet.  I normally go during the week at ridiculous-early o'clock when I'm off for summer vacation, since that's when you can catch most of the farmers and get the best selection.  It's a good idea to go and build a rapport with some of the farmers.  They'll give you discounts on bulk fruits & veg if they know you're going to be a regular customer.  It's a bit more effort than YDKFM, but it's totally worth it!

Also, if you're a Super-H Mart shopper, they've got boxes of mangoes on sale this week as well as some good looking oranges.

Hi Rachelle,

Welcome. I typically make the trip up to YDFM because I like selection. The nice thing about the SFM is you get to see produce from a variety of sources not just one distributor.

I don't know if it's worth it to you to buy from the wholesalers. I'm on Destiny Organics email list. They send me a price list every week. They offer half cases of some stuff, but usually cases are much cheaper from YDFM. I sometimes buy cases of lettuce from them if I can't find any at YDFM. I've attached Destiny's price list for next week in case your interested.

Also, you could try contacting other conventional wholesalers at the SFM. Many will sell to the public on a cash basis. I called a few when I first moved to Atlanta but never followed through to buy anything. Some specialize in different produce such as Mexican or Asian. You can search for their contact info here: Produce Wholesale Companies

thankyou for posting this- I do not live near ATL, but am coming to visit there now from time to time. I had only known where the Whole Foods was in I forget what part of town... maybe Roswell? Anyway, that's where I'll be staying when I visit. I have never been to an indoors "farmers market." haha.
